Your Role on the Team

The University of California, Irvine is seeking qualified candidates for a Per-Diem Specialty Clinical Associate Medical Intensivist position for ICU/SDU coverage . Duties will include clinical service primarily at the UCI site in Los Alamitos Hospital . The successful candidate must be board eligible/certified in critical care medicine, and licensed/eligible in California.


Clinical responsibilities will involve:

Direct Patient Care
o Provide comprehensive care to critically ill medical patients in the ICU and step down units, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, multi-organ failure, and other life-threatening conditions.
o Perform and supervise critical care procedures (e.g., endotracheal intubation, central venous and arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, advanced ventilator management).
o Lead daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds, developing and coordinating individualized patient care plans.


Consultation and Collaboration
o Serve as the attending intensivist for patients admitted to the medical ICU and relevant patients in the step-down unit.
o Provide critical care consultation for patients on hospital wards, ED, and other units as requested.
o Collaborate closely with hospitalists, emergency physicians, subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and ancillary staff to ensure high-quality patient-centered care.


Clinical Oversight and Supervision
o Supervise and mentor advanced practice providers (APPs in the ICU and step-down unit
o Ensure evidence-based practice standards and adherence to institutional protocols for ICU management.


Communication
o Engage in frequent and compassionate communication with patients' families regarding goals of care, prognosis, and treatment options.
o Participate in family meetings, advanced care planning, and end-of-life discussions when appropriate.


Quality, Safety, and System Roles
o Contribute to ICU quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and guideline development.
o Participate in ICU administrative duties as assigned, including mortality/morbidity reviews and ICU performance improvement.
o Assist in developing and updating ICU policies, procedures, and clinical pathways.


Continuity of Care
o Ensure appropriate documentation, billing, and handoff of ICU patients.
o Support safe transitions of care to step-down units, hospital wards, or outpatient settings. What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

• Candidates must possess an M.D./ D.O. (or equivalent) degree.
• Board-certified or eligible in the field of Critical Care Medicine
• Active and current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification
• Eligible for California licensure
• Demonstrated experience in quality improvement to improve patient outcomes.
• Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and objectives while in compliance of all UC policies and procedures. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all state and federal privacy laws.
• Leadership skills; ability to motivate, inspire, communicate with faculty, residents, staff, and peers to maintain a professional, team-based approach in the care of patients.
• Experienced in providing and/or oversight of care

Benefits eligible base salary compensation based on Critical Care benchmarks for a Specialty Clinical Associate within this specialty is $250/hr - $281/hr . In addition, candidates have the potential to earn incentives on top of their base salary contingent on performance and experience.
