Job Description

Job Title: Machinist / CNC Programmer Job Description

An established hydraulic manifold manufacturer in Lenexa is seeking an experienced Mill Machinist / Programmer to program, set up, and operate CNC milling machines while ensuring high-quality production and on-time delivery. This role combines hands-on machining with CNC programming and process improvement, working closely with peers and leadership in a climate-controlled, small to medium-sized machine shop.

Responsibilities
  • Set up, maintain, and operate CNC milling machines in accordance with standard work instructions and routing documentation.
  • Develop project documentation (routing) and machine code using MasterCam, Vericut, Solidworks, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Create, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs, including G-code and M-code, and support CMM-related programming needs.
  • Diagnose and resolve programming and machining issues, advising peers and supervision as necessary to maintain productivity and quality.
  • Work collaboratively with peers to maintain production schedules and meet production deadlines while sustaining high quality standards.
  • Document and maintain tool inventory, ensuring tools are available, properly stored, and ready for use.
  • Partner with management to develop best practices, continuous improvement activities, work holding solutions, and tooling strategies.
  • Communicate promptly with supervision when direction is unclear or when issues arise that may impact production or quality.
  • Set up machining centers according to routing and standard operating procedures, producing in-tolerance setup pieces.
  • Follow temporary manufacturing deviation request (TMDR) procedures when changes are required and ensure proper documentation.
  • Decommission machines after operations are complete, following established procedures for shutdown and cleanup.
  • Build and tear down tooling as needed, inspecting tooling for wear and notifying supervision to maintain tool crib organization and cleanliness.
  • Load parts on machines following standard work instructions and established best practices.
  • Inspect parts using in-process inspection methods to verify conformance, identify non-conforming material, and take appropriate action.
  • Stop machines and notify supervision when non-conforming material is detected, tagging material with clear defect descriptions.
  • Sort and contain non-conforming material according to SOP to prevent unintended use and maintain quality standards.
  • Deburr parts according to standard work instructions, producing desired results and visually inspecting for abnormal conditions.
  • Run and clean multiple machines as directed, maintaining a tidy and safe work area.
  • Work in a team environment with operators, machinists, and leads to achieve production goals and support colleagues as directed by supervision.
Essential Skills
  • Several years of machining experience, including hands-on work with CNC milling machines.
  • Strong knowledge of G-code and M-code for CNC programming and machine operation.
  • Experience with CMM-related programming or integration in a machining environment.
  • Recent, practical experience using MasterCam for CNC programming.
  • Recent experience using Vericut for program verification and simulation.
  • Proficiency with Solidworks for interpreting or creating models used in machining and programming.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products to develop routing documentation, reports, and project records.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings for machining operations.
  • Experience working with CAD/CAM tools in a machine shop setting.
  • Hands-on experience with mills, lathes, and general machining processes.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as micrometers and other inspection equipment.
  • Experience with CNC controls and equipment such as Haas, Okuma, Fanuc, and multi-axis machines.
  • Ability to perform setups, including tooling build and teardown, on CNC machines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing in-tolerance, high-quality parts.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Formal technical school training in machining, CNC programming, or a related field is preferred.
  • Background in manual machining and machine shop operations.
  • Experience working in a small to medium-sized machine shop environment.
  • Familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOP) and routing documentation in manufacturing.
  • Comfort working with inspection processes, non-conforming material handling, and quality documentation.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement activities and contribute ideas for process optimization.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly share information with supervisors and peers.
  • Organizational skills to maintain tool inventory and support tool crib cleanliness and order.
Why Work Here?

Employees enjoy long-term career paths in a stable and laid-back environment where supervisors provide clear expectations without micromanaging. The steady Monday–Friday daytime schedule supports work-life balance, and the small team structure allows individuals to have a meaningful impact on production, quality, and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

This role is based in a climate-controlled facility that produces hydraulic manifolds, operating as a small to medium-sized machine shop with a team of approximately 5–7 operators, machinists, and leads. The standard shift runs from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, providing a consistent daytime schedule. The culture is relaxed yet focused, with clear-cut deadlines and expectations, and supervisors who do not micromanage but rely on machinists to take ownership of their work. Dress code is casual and practical, typically jeans or shorts, T-shirt, and steel-toe footwear, suitable for a hands-on machining environment that emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and teamwork.
