Job Title: General Laborer – Erosion Control Construction

Job Description

This role supports erosion control construction projects by preparing job sites, handling materials, and assisting with the installation of concrete mat systems. You work as part of a traveling field crew, follow project plans and directions from the superintendent, and perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in all weather conditions across multiple locations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare construction sites for erosion control installations, including clearing, leveling, and conditioning soil.
• Rake and prepare soil surfaces to ensure proper application of concrete mats.
• Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment from trucks safely and efficiently.
• Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and basic power tools to perform daily tasks.
• Read and interpret construction plans and follow detailed instructions from the superintendent and foreman.
• Support the operator/foreman and other crew members with general construction and labor tasks as needed.
• Perform heavy lifting of materials and equipment, including items up to 50 pounds.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including job sites, tools, and equipment.
• Work long hours on a production-focused schedule, meeting project deadlines and productivity expectations.
• Travel to job sites across the country and remain on location for extended periods of time.
• Adapt to working in various field conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and other environmental elements.
• Follow all safety procedures and guidelines to protect yourself, your team, and project property.

Essential Skills

• Proven work ethic and reliability in physically demanding roles.
• Experience with general construction or general labor work.
• Ability to safely use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and basic power tools.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively and remain away from home for weeks or months at a time.
• Ability to follow directions closely and work under the guidance of a superintendent and foreman.
• Mechanical aptitude for working with tools, equipment, and basic construction processes.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to site procedures.
• Capacity to work long hours, including 60–100 hours per week when required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in concrete work, carpentry, or general construction is a plus.
• Experience in solar, sheet metal, painting, pipeline, packaging, or assembly work is beneficial.
• Experience with forklifts or other material-handling equipment is an advantage.
• Mechanical experience or aptitude for field service work is helpful.
• Ability to juggle competing priorities and adapt to changing tasks on the job site.
• Demonstrated conscientiousness, dependability, and commitment to the role, team, and organization.
• Strong sense of initiative and willingness to take action to achieve project goals.
• Commitment to continuous improvement of personal skills, work processes, and project outcomes.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a small, close-knit crew.
• Comfort with heavy lifting, packing, and cleaning tasks as part of daily responsibilities.

Work Environment

This is a field-based, outdoor role on construction sites across the country, including projects in numerous states. You work as part of a small crew that typically includes a superintendent, an operator/foreman, and several laborers. Travel is extensive, and you may be away from home for weeks or months at a time, with limited scheduled time off during peak project periods. Work hours are long, often at least 60 hours per week and sometimes up to 100 hours, with Sunday generally as the primary day off, though some weeks may require work every day. Lodging is provided in shared hotel rooms with another laborer. Transportation to job sites is arranged, either riding with another employee or flying to the project city and meeting the crew at the hotel or airport. The work takes place outdoors in all weather conditions—rain or shine, heat or cold—and requires comfort with extreme temperatures and variable site conditions. Standard field attire suitable for construction and outdoor work is expected, with an emphasis on safety and practicality.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Overland Park, KS.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
