Patients will range from medical-surgical to PCU/stepdown/ICU level of care. Ratios may vary between 1:4 to 1:6 depending on patient acuity. The role may include floating to a PCU unit if necessary. The unit operates under a team nursing model, sometimes involving collaboration with LPNs. Applicants should be prepared for a fast-paced environment with fluctuating patient ratios. Teamwork is essential as the unit supports a high number of admissions and discharges. Comfort in managing patients requiring a variety of care levels is critical. The RN must be adaptable and ready to respond to changes in patient needs and staffing levels. The unit may involve high patient turnover, necessitating effective prioritization and time management.
