General Summary

The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to provide direct patient care as delegated by clinical staff. Key qualities include professionalism, excellent customer service, attention to detail, multitasking ability, and critical thinking skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established safety protocols including infection prevention and safe patient handling.
• Escort patients, obtain vital signs and EKGs, verify medications and allergies, and document medical histories accurately and promptly.
• Manage phone communications, relay messages, and act as a liaison between patients and providers.
• Communicate test results to patients and assist with follow-up calls.
• Assist with medication renewals, authorizations, and administer medications as ordered.
• Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Schedule appointments, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures as directed.
• Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals efficiently.
• Maintain supply inventory and ensure exam areas are clean and well-stocked.
• Educate patients on electronic health record access and assist with enrollment.
• Support orientation and training of new medical assistants.
• Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, adaptability, and maintain punctuality.

Education

Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program or equivalent experience. High school diploma required.

Experience

Preferred: One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or related medical specialist, ideally in a clinical setting.

Certification/License

Preferred: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential from an accredited organization such as the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

Requires considerable mental focus. Physical demands include lifting up to 35 lbs, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Exposure to infectious diseases and occasional hostile individuals. Frequent contact with blood and bodily fluids. Minimal physical discomfort expected.
