Crane Operator

This role involves safely operating 2535 ton overhead cranes in a steel processing facility to move, load, and position steel coils and related products. You will handle material movement throughout the plant, support loading operations for trucks, railcars, and other vehicles, and work both independently and as part of a team in a clean, fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Operate 2535 ton overhead cranes safely and efficiently to move steel coils and other steel products throughout the facility.
• Load steel coils onto equipment to be slit according to production requirements and instructions.
• Load trucks, cars, and railcars with steel products, ensuring secure and accurate placement for transport.
• Move finished and in-process product around the facility to support production flow and shipping schedules.
• Lift up to 50 pounds unassisted as part of daily material handling tasks.
• Work effectively both in a team environment and independently, depending on operational needs.
• Follow all safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment such as hearing and eye protection and, when needed, a hard hat.
• Assist with basic banding and securing of steel products to ensure safe handling and transport.
• Use forklifts and other material handling equipment as needed, in line with training and safety guidelines.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and contribute to overall facility cleanliness.
• Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members to coordinate crane movements and loading activities.
• Adhere to production schedules and quality standards while maintaining a strong focus on safety.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience working with steel products in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
• Experience in larger steel or metal fabrication facilities.
• Comfort working on different shifts, including 1st and 2nd shift schedules.
• Strong attention to detail when loading and moving materials.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality to qualify for attendance-based incentives.
• Willingness to wear appropriate manufacturing attire, including safety toe footwear and metatarsal protection when required.

Work Environment

This position is based in a larger steel facility that has recently expanded and maintains clean, well-organized operations with a family-owned and operated feel. The work involves industrial manufacturing conditions with regular use of overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment. Openings are available on 1st and 2nd shifts, with typical hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for 1st shift and 4:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. for 2nd shift. The facility requires safety toe footwear, with metatarsal protection preferred, and proper manufacturing attire such as jeans, a t-shirt or hoodie. Hearing and eye protection are required, and a hard hat may be needed depending on the work area. The environment supports teamwork, safety, and consistent production in a modern steel-handling operation.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Butler, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $24.00/hr.
