Position Summary:

Establishes and maintains rapport with students, parents, school administrators and staff, and other contacts outside of the organization. Promotes and protects the optimal health of students. Participates in the formulation of policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases within the school.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Acts independently; consistently exercises discretion and judgment in performing work which is predominantly intellectual and varied in nature.
2. Establishes and maintains rapport with students, parents, school administrators and staff, and other contacts outside of the organization.
3. Promotes and protects the optimal health of students.
• Identifies health problems through observation, interviews and analysis of records.
• Coordinates and participates in screening services.
• Facilitates access to immunizations.
• Evaluates the urgency and complexity of the need for action or referral.
4. Provides health assessments:
• Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, etc.
• Identifies deviant health findings.
5. Participates in the formulation of policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases within the school.
6. Provides emergency care for illness and injury occurring while student is under school jurisdiction.
• Plans for supplies and equipment.
• Educates and updates staff in first aid procedures.
• Educates staff in administration of medications.
7. Observes the school environment and reports health and safety hazards to the school principle.
8. Consults with parents regarding health of their children.
• Guide families in self-help in recognition and solution of health problems.
9. Promotes communication with physicians, dentists, and community resources to plan for well being of the student.
10. Provides health education.
• Provides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life styles that effect health.
• Serves as resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction.
11. Provides in-service education to the school staff to promote and maintain student health.
12. Acts as resource for accessing community agencies for coordination of services.
13. Collect data that will allow for evaluation of school health services and analysis of outcome measures.
• General statistics.
• Conducts research to determine cost-effective alternatives for healthcare programs.
14. Develops, implements, and participates in a Quality Improvement Program for continual program effectiveness.
15. Meets with other school professionals to identify problems and propose solutions relative to student health issues.
16. Participates in public relations activities of the school and inter-agency activities of the community.
17. Adheres to Bay City Public School and Medical Center Policies.
18. Reports all illnesses and injuries to manager.
19. Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards, as evidenced by observation, documentation, and peer feedback.

Required:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Valid Michigan Registered Nurse License
• Current CPR issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross Certification
• Experience preferred in areas of Public Health and child/pediatric care, including but not limited to preventive needs, childhood diseases, and psychosocial aspects of growth and development
• Agrees to maintain confidentiality of all student records/information, including, health records, scholastic, counseling, and other administrative records
• Completion of fingerprinting through CHRISS

Preferred:

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
