Job Posting Title: WAE-Veterinary Assistant 1, 2, or 3-Anesthesia Position Type: Wages as Earned (Fixed Term) Department: LSUAM VetMed - VTH - Admin - Nursing - Anesthesia (Torri Rae Collins (00006295)) Work Location: Veterinary Medicine Pay Grade: Job Description: This position provides anesthesia and anesthetic support for all clinical service areas, including Small Animal Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, specialty small animal services, and all Large Animal clinical services. Responsibilities include preparing and monitoring patients before, during, and after anesthesia; assisting faculty clinicians and house officers with anesthetic procedures; and ensuring the safe delivery of anesthesia in accordance with established hospital protocols. The individual must possess expertise in the safe handling and restraint of small animals and be able to provide instruction and guidance to veterinary students in anesthesia techniques, patient monitoring, and proper animal handling while fostering a safe and effective clinical learning environment. WAE-Veterinary Assistant 1 35%-Assist with all aspects of anesthetic induction and patient preparation, including assisting with the placement and maintenance of peripheral intravenous, central venous, and arterial catheters. Assist with endotracheal intubation, including verification of placement, aspiration prevention, and troubleshooting airway complications. Assist with providing technical support for epidural injections, regional nerve blocks, and other anesthesia-related procedures. Develop and maintain working knowledge of sedatives, injectable and inhalant anesthetic agents, anesthetic equipment, and multi-modal patient monitoring to ensure the safe administration and recovery of anesthetized patients. 30%-Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Anesthesia Service, including assisting faculty clinicians, house officers, and veterinary students with anesthetic procedures, patient monitoring, and emergency cases. Develop and apply working knowledge of patient care, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic techniques, and treatment protocols in accordance with established hospital standards. Assist with the clinical instruction of veterinary and veterinary technician students by assisting clinical veterinary students, house officers, and faculty clinicians with anesthesia procedures, patient care, and treatments while promoting safety. 15%-Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, and quality control of anesthesia equipment, while ensuring anesthesia work areas are clean, organized, and adequately stocked with supplies. Maintain the Anesthesia Service in a constant state of readiness by preparing equipment, medications, and emergency supplies for scheduled procedures and urgent cases. Assist with ensuring immediate availability of equipment and materials required for cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation (CPCR) and other emergency anesthetic interventions. 15%-Participate in providing emergency anesthesia support by assisting in the assessment, stabilization, and anesthetic management of patients presenting emergency service requiring surgical intervention. Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as assigned, including serving as essential personnel during emergency response and ride-out operations. 5%-Other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree; OR associate's degree in veterinary technology OR credentials as a vet tech or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties. Job Skills Needed for All Levels Knowledge of basic animal care and handling including restraint Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and abbreviations Basic computer skills, problem-solving and communication skills Knowledge of proper medical record keeping (paper and electronic) Math skills; including drug calculations (dosage & conversions) Operation of equipment, diagnostic tests and handheld analyzers Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to collect blood from a number of different sites by venipuncture Proper administration of oral, sub-cutaneous, intramuscular, and intra venous medications Ability to prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignment simultaneously Additional Job Description Essential Personnel - Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and emergency response.
