The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) works to encourage all New Mexicans to pursue a college education by making it more accessible and affordable. The department holds a statewide vision for higher education in which New Mexicans have the ability to achieve the highest level of education they desire, are ensured a seamless educational experience from pre-school through college, can afford to attend one of New Mexico's fine institutions and will succeed once enrolled, and will be prepared to participate in New Mexico's high wage workforce.

Why does the job exist?

This internship opportunity exists to strengthen the agency's capacity to manage, analyze, and communicate higher education data. The role will support datasets by accurately collecting, cleaning, validating, and documenting; supporting the creation of dashboards and data visualizations that inform statewide planning. This intern will perform basic statistical analyses to identify key trends, maintain data workflows and information resources, and provide supporting coordination with institutions on data submissions and verifications.


How does it get done?

This intern position will:
- Strengthen the agency's capacity to manage, analyze, and communicate statewide higher education data
- Collect, clean, validate, and organize datasets submitted by higher education institutions to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability
- Support the creation of dashboards, visualizations, and structured data summaries for internal reporting, legislative requests, and statewide planning initiatives
- Conduct basic statistical analyses to identify trends in enrollment, student outcomes, and institutional performance
- Maintain data documentation, workflow processes, and shared system resources to promote consistency, transparency, and continuity in data operations
- Participate in project meetings and assist with assigned data tasks
- Coordinate with higher education institutions on data submissions, clarifications, and verification needs


Who are the customers?

This position serves HED leadership, employees, associated agencies, local organizations and students enrolled in New Mexico Higher Education Institutions.


Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience using Excel or other data tools to organize and clean information
- Ability to create clear charts, tables, or basic data visualizations
- Foundational understanding of statistics and trend identification
- Interest in higher education policy, data systems, or public sector research


Minimum Qualification

Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university OR completion of at least four (4) semesters (or equivalent) at an accredited college or university within the last two (2) years.


Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting, with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computer and telephone usage. This position also requires the employee to use a copy machine, printer, fax machine and 10 key calculators. Sitting for long periods of time, bending, stooping to file, and occasionally lifting a minimum of 25 pounds.
