Neurodiagnostic Specialist II Be a part of a world‑class academic health‑care system at UChicago Medicine as a Neurodiagnostic Specialist II. The Neurodiagnostic Specialist II works independently and proficiently in the preparation of patients for both routine and long‑term AV/EEG monitoring. The Neurodiagnostic Specialist II has the ability to act as a physician extender by performing initial analysis of recorded EEG and audio‑video data and creating a preliminary report for the purpose of physician review. The Neurodiagnostic Specialist II will perform data management by clipping, pruning, archiving and purging EEG data after the final report is signed by the attending. The Neurodiagnostic Specialist II also performs specialty procedures and testing, including but not limited to intracranial EEG set‑up and recording from implanted electrodes, assisting the physician with stimulation via intracranial electrodes, ECOG and DBS recordings in the operating room, and recording in the radiology suite during a WADA test. Essential Job Functions Independently writes preliminary EEG reports with detailed description of EEG patterns, clinical behavior, seizure semiology, and mapping of ictal events and interictal abnormalities; provides representative samples and preliminary report to epileptologist on service. Accurately annotates normal and abnormal EEG findings, recognizing artifacts, seizures and seizure‑like patterns, subtle changes, changes in level of consciousness, and EEG patterns of prognostic significance, utilizing ACNS accepted terminology. Obtains history and explains procedure to patients; accurately measures head and applies recording electrodes with the collodion or paste technique according to the 10/20 or expanded 10/10 system. Obtains standard and complex long‑term audio/video EEG recordings from scalp and intracranial electrodes; recognizes artifacts, both physiologic and non‑physiologic, and equipment malfunction and takes appropriate steps to eliminate or rectify them. Identifies abnormalities (e.g., ictal, inter‑ictal, paroxysmal activity and non‑epileptic behavioral events) and clips, prunes, and archives these as separate files in accordance with institutional SOP. Maintains monitoring equipment in excellent operating condition, detects instrument and computer malfunctions, corrects problems whenever possible, and notifies the supervisor. Performs intraoperative electrocorticography, cortical stimulation, DBS recordings, and intra‑carotid sodium amobarbital (Wada) studies with minimal assistance. Required Qualifications EEG Technician or equivalent. Four (4) years performing standard and complex neurodiagnostic procedures. CPR certified in basic cardiac life support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Successful completion of ASET LTM 100 online Introduction to LTM for EMU Personnel course. Ability to accurately interpret EEG data for the purpose of drafting EEG reports. Must be able to perform two of the four modalities (ICU EEG, NCV, LTM and ECoG). Must possess ASET competency skills and knowledge required by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) for national board certification. Proficiency with the International 10‑20 and 10‑10 systems. Proficient in working with and troubleshooting sophisticated computerized equipment required to perform multimodal neurodiagnostic procedures. Preferred Qualifications Associate degree or graduate of an Electroneurodiagnostic Technology program. Registered in two of three possible specialties recognized by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technology (ABRET): EEG, CLTM, NA‑CLTM. Double‑boarded; if not double board, incumbent must take second board exam within 2 years of hire.
