Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic

Summary This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facilities Management Service at the VA New Jersey Medical Center in East Orange, NJ. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration) equipment and controls. Qualifications To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience is not required to be a specific length; applicants must provide evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. They will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element and then rated on: Equipment assembly, installation, and repair Interpret instructions and specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials and technical practices Troubleshooting and use of tools and equipment Ability to work with HVAC equipment and controls Experience may include paid, unpaid, volunteer work, such as National Service programs. Credit will be given for all qualifying experience, including volunteer work that demonstrates necessary skills. Duties This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered for vacancies as they become available. Major duties include: Repair, inspect, lubricate, install, and troubleshoot all air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment at the medical center. Responsible for heating systems in centrally controlled systems. Work with household and commercial refrigerators, water coolers, ice machines, window and central AC systems, and chiller systems. Install necessary piping, tubing, wiring, and control circuits for assigned systems and equipment. Use refrigerants and refrigeration oils within the scope of work. Observe safe trade practices and handle tools and materials safely. Assist in maintenance and repair of steam distribution systems, water treatment systems, sewage ejection systems, medical and dental air and vacuum systems, emergency generators, and general maintenance and repairs. Subject to emergency callbacks. Work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, as determined during the interview process. Physical requirements include bending, reaching, holding awkward positions, working from ladders and platforms, climbing, walking, stooping, lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs or occasionally over 50 lbs, hoisting, using hand trucks and pulleys, and performing repairs from high places. #J-18808-Ljbffr Veterans Affairs
