As-Needed Per Diem Police Officer (Special Events)

Position Overview To be considered for this position, candidates must submit a City of Santa Clara Employment Application and proof of completion of a Basic Peace Officer Academy certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) or proof of completion of Level 1 Reserve Peace Officer POST Regular Basic Course (Reserve Police Officers Only). All applicants are required to obtain authorization from their home agency chief of police/sheriff authorizing them to work on a per diem basis for the City of Santa Clara. The Santa Clara Police Department provides community service through the “Santa Clara Way” of service. This is an at‑will, as‑needed position with no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 for retired CalPERS annuitants. Hourly Rate Hourly rate: $95.00. Responsibilities Patrol designated areas by foot, bicycle, or other means to preserve law and order. Direct traffic and enforce parking regulations, issuing citations for violations. Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorists. Discover and prevent crimes and enforce laws and ordinances. Maintain awareness of wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress. Conduct investigations at incident scenes to determine what, if any, crime has been committed. Respond to calls for protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, public service, and complaints. Investigate complaints and take appropriate action, including use of deadly or non‑deadly force when necessary. Use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions. Identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence. Locate and interview victims and witnesses. Work in partnership with the Santa Clara Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office to follow through on criminal complaints. Apprehend and arrest offenders under federal, state, and local laws and codes. Control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or in potentially hostile situations. Establish and preserve good relationships with the general public. Answer public questions concerning local and state laws, procedures, and agency activities, applying good public‑relations principles. Participate in continuous POST‑required training, attend meetings and trainings. Prepare reports on activities, operations, arrests, unusual incidents, investigative reports, and case information. Testify in courts and hearings, preparing and presenting case evidence. Escort prisoners to county jail, juvenile hall, or the Santa Clara Police Department. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Currently employed as a full‑time or part‑time peace officer with a California law‑enforcement agency. Currently working as a Level I Reserve Police Officer with a California law‑enforcement agency. Retired as a full‑time peace officer with a California law‑enforcement agency. Or two years of experience as a peace officer with a California law‑enforcement agency and possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by POST. Licenses & Certificates Valid driver’s license. Proof of a current Basic or higher POST certificate at time of application and for the duration of employment (not required for Reserve Police Officers). Completion of the Field Training Program with home agency. Completion of the Probationary Period with home agency. Current CPR and First Aid certification. Reserve Police Officers must also provide proof of completion of Level 1 Reserve Peace Officer POST Regular Basic Course. Physical and Other Requirements Minimum age 20 at application filing and 21 at appointment. Meet and maintain POST employment standards. For CalPERS retirees, no more than 960 working hours in a fiscal year. Possess the strength and physical ability to perform essential tasks. Hearing, speech, and mental capabilities sufficient for all essential functions. Willingness to be fingerprinted and to pass departmental interview, psychological, medical, and background investigations. Vision Requirements Sufficient color, night, depth, and peripheral vision. Visual acuity not less than 20/80 uncorrected and 20/30 corrected. Exempt if soft contact lenses provide the required correction. Physical Demands and Working Environment Exposure to outdoor weather, extreme temperatures, and hostile environments; moderate to high noise levels. Work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays; may travel for meetings or court appearances. Daily tasks requiring walking, standing, sitting, biking or running for prolonged periods; occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and twisting; occasional climbing and balancing. Frequently lifting or moving moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lifting heavy weights. Required to use ballistic vest, duty belt, and firearm; a safety equipment requirement. Special events and irregular hours may be required. Additional Requirements Willingness to arrest people and use force appropriately, including the potential to use deadly force if necessary. Ability to learn quickly, write reports, read laws, and communicate effectively under stress. Strong ethical conduct, emotional stability, problem‑solving, and public‑relations skills.
