We are seeking a hands-on Controller to build the accounting function for a growing mortgage technology company. Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will own mortgage accounting, establish financial controls, modernize systems, and introduce AI-driven automation. This is a high-ownership role with a path toward broader finance leadership and team development.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead the accounting function from the ground up, establishing accounting policies, internal controls, and scalable financial processes.
• Own full-cycle accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, accruals, reconciliations, and monthly close activities.
• Manage loan-level mortgage accounting from origination through settlement, including warehouse funding, gain-on-sale recognition, and investor reconciliations.
• Oversee complex mortgage accounting activities involving securitizations, mortgage servicing rights, and hedging transactions.
• Lead the transition from QuickBooks to Campfire, implementing an AI-native general ledger and integrating accounting workflows with loan origination and warehouse funding systems.
• Establish and document internal controls supporting GAAP compliance, SOC 1 Type II reporting, and external audit readiness.
• Deliver accurate financial reporting to the CFO, executive leadership, lenders, and the board while continuously improving close efficiency.
• Partner with the CFO on accounting strategy, automation initiatives, and the eventual hiring and development of an accounting team.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of recent, hands-on mortgage lending or structured credit accounting experience, with direct operational exposure to loan origination, securitization, mortgage servicing rights, or hedge accounting.
• Controller or Assistant Controller-level experience with demonstrated ownership of financial close, external audits, or accounting system implementations.
• Strong technical accounting foundation across GAAP, general ledger management, accrual accounting, AP/AR, financial reporting, and monthly close processes.
• Approximately 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within mortgage lending, financial services, or a high-growth fintech environment.
• Experience implementing accounting technology, improving financial processes, or automating workflows, with an interest in AI-enabled financial systems.
• CPA designation, Big 4 experience, or previous involvement in building accounting teams and infrastructure is advantageous.
