Director, Data Scientist - External Data Strategy

Data is at the center of everything we do. The External Data Strategy team builds the data pipelines, analytics, and models that enable Capital One to understand our customers’ financial lives. We leverage Python, Spark, SQL, Databricks, and AWS capabilities to deliver powerful data for our customers.

In this role, you will be part of a team that operates across billions of customer records to unlock opportunities that help everyday people save money, time, and reduce pain in their financial lives.

In this role, you will:

• Partner with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver data and insights that drive the business
• Leverage a broad stack of technologies — Python, Conda, AWS, Databricks, Spark, and more — to reveal insights within large data volumes
• Build machine learning models and data pipelines through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation
• Develop deep subject matter expertise in consumer financial data and how that data enables Capital One to make the right decisions for our customers
• Lead a team of 10-15 data scientists as a leader-of-leaders by setting a strategic agenda, providing technical oversight and guidance, and developing talented individual contributors and managers
• Translate the complexity of your work into tangible business goals

• A data guru. You can retrieve, combine, and analyze data from a variety of sources and structures

Basic Qualifications

• Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining one of the following with the expectation that the degree will be obtained by the start date: a) A Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative field plus 9 years of data analytics experience; b) A Master's Degree in a quantitative field or MBA with a quantitative concentration plus 7 years of data analytics experience; c) A PhD in a quantitative field plus 4 years of data analytics experience
• At least 4 years of experience leveraging open source programming languages for large scale data analysis
• At least 4 years of experience working with machine learning
• At least 4 years of experience utilizing relational databases

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience working with AWS
• At least 3 years of experience managing people
• At least 5 years of experience in Python for large scale data analysis
• At least 5 years of experience with machine learning
• At least 5 years of experience with Spark

Compensation and Benefits

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on hours worked. This information is solely for candidates hired to work in listed locations.

McLean, VA: $269,100 - $307,200 for Dir, Data Science

New York, NY: $293,600 - $335,100 for Dir, Data Science

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range for that location, and the actual salary will be in the offer letter.

This role is eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI).
