Job Overview - Hospital Pharmacy Technician


The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and performs technical, non-clinical duties related to medication management, compounding, recordkeeping, and distribution. This role supports inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings, including IV room, OR, and ambulatory services.


Core Responsibilities - Pharmacy Tech Role

Operational Duties:

• Assist pharmacists in collecting patient medication histories
• Prepare, label, and package medications accurately based on prescriptions
• Compound both sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products, including chemotherapy and TPN
• Dispense controlled substances in compliance with hospital and state regulations
• Maintain accurate electronic health records and patient drug profiles
• Train new Pharmacy Technicians and support onboarding initiatives
• Rotate through specialized areas (IV room, operating room, satellite pharmacy) as assigned
• Ensure timely completion of daily pharmacy tasks and documentation
• Maintain IV certification and participate in ongoing skills assessments

Retail & Ambulatory Support:

• Input outpatient prescriptions and select correct medications for fills
• Coordinate delivery or pickup of medications for ambulatory patients
• Assist with discharge medication counseling and medication reconciliation

Clinical Pharmacy Support:

• Participate in cost-effective medication management under pharmacist supervision
• Interpret basic medical record information to support safe drug usage
• Detect and report potential medication-related adverse events
• Support clinical interventions such as renal dose adjustments, anticoagulation therapy, and IV-to-oral conversions
• Assist with pharmacy-led patient education initiatives

Health & Safety Considerations

• Follow hospital protocols for hazardous drug handling and infection prevention
• Use proper techniques for lifting, carrying, and transporting supplies and medications
• Follow biohazard safety precautions during patient interaction or code response situations

Minimum Requirements

Education:

• High School Diploma or GED required

Experience:

• 3-5 years of relevant pharmacy technician experience preferred
• Must meet Pharmacy Technician I criteria

Licenses & Certifications:

• Active Texas Pharmacy Technician Registration (required)
• National CPhT Certification (preferred)
• IV Certification (ACPE-accredited or state equivalent) required for hospital roles
• Certification not required for outpatient or ambulatory settings
