Cleanroom Manager/Professor of the Practice

Position Summary The Institute of Materials Science & Engineering (IMSE) at Washington University in St. Louis seeks a Professor of the Practice specializing in cleanroom micro‑ and nano‑fabrication. The role supports the IMSE cleanroom user facility, fostering research and teaching through curriculum development and maintenance of high‑standard equipment. Major Responsibilities Teach two 3‑unit courses per academic year to graduate and undergraduate students on micro‑ and nano‑device fabrication and characterization. Deliver a workshop or short course during summer. Manage the cleanroom facility: train users, supervise technical staff, oversee maintenance, coordinate equipment installation, maintain safety standards. Additional duties include coordinating with faculty and research administrators on equipment use and acquisition, updating the facility website with equipment status and capabilities, expanding user base through outreach, and organizing the annual IMSE Open House. Strong speaking and written communication skills are essential. The IMSE cleanroom houses state‑of‑the‑art equipment for thin‑film deposition, optical and electron‑beam patterning, plasma etching, and metrology. It serves more than 50 faculty labs across the university and supports educational training for the next generation of scientists and engineers.
