OUR MISSION

The Pontchartrain Levee District Police Department is an organization whose duties are designed to aid and support the Pontchartrain Levee District’s primary missions of hurricane and flood protection within its various levee systems as well as the overall safety and protection of the citizens and assets within the Pontchartrain Levee District. The law enforcement activities of the Department shall be primarily focused on the levee systems and the areas immediately adjacent thereto. The Department shall enforce all Federal, State, Parish and Municipal Statutes, Laws, Codes and Regulations. The Pontchartrain Levee District Police Department shall also be a supplement to the Federal, State, Parish and Municipal law enforcement agencies having concurrent jurisdiction.

OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

The Pontchartrain Levee District jurisdictional area includes East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes on the East Bank. It is the duty of the Pontchartrain Levee District Police Department to patrol and inspect the levees and floodwalls that surround the jurisdictional boundaries and to monitor the various flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system. The Department also serves to protect lives and property, while also enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned, and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e., Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain.

Agency Preferred Qualification: The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of law enforcement experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

Make daily patrols within the jurisdiction of this levee district, 6 east bank parishes (East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles) along the mainline Mississippi River Levee, as well as a Hurricane Protection Levee in St. Charles Parish by:

  • Patrols an assigned area by a police unit to check for vandalism, fire(s), unsafe practices, levee inspection monitoring the integrity of the levee system and/or suspicious circumstances and/or other violations of the Louisiana Revised Statutes.

  • Investigating accidents and/or coordinate and/or acquire proper assistance for those accidents involving hazardous materials and take charge until proper officials arrive on scene.

  • Directs traffic, writes citations for levee violations and/or unauthorized use of levee and/or any and all other violations as set out under the Louisiana Revised Statutes; provides tourist information and provide security details, when formally requested, and escort for all levee related levee inspections and/or storm events and/or storm emergencies.

  • Intervening independently when necessary to restore order, protect life and/or property and/or prevent crime throughout the entire PLD Jurisdictional area; intervening when necessary to restore order, protect life and/or property and/or prevent crime throughout PLD jurisdictional area during a declared state of emergency and/or a storm event and/or storm emergencies.

  • Patrol and/or Monitor and/or Examination of industrial plants, barges, residential areas for vandalism, fires, unsafe practices or suspicious circumstances of violation of the Louisiana Revised Statutes.

  • Assist other law enforcement agencies within district when needed, appear in court as a witness when subpoenaed, and/or perform any and all other duties as directed by supervisors within the PLD chain of command.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This appointment type may be filled as Probational - up to 24 months.

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
