Key facts Location: Altoona, Iowa Engagement: Full-time Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience Visa: Sponsorship available for qualified candidates What you'll do Collaborate with product managers and marketing teams to understand customer requirements and translate them into product specifications. Design and develop product concepts using CAD software, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and aesthetic appeal. Create detailed engineering drawings and specifications for manufacturing processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards. Conduct feasibility studies and cost analysis to evaluate the viability of new product designs. Prototype new products and conduct rigorous testing to validate design performance and durability. Work closely with manufacturing teams to address any design-related issues during production and implement necessary modifications. Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers to enhance product quality and innovation. Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to incorporate best practices into product design. Document design processes and maintain accurate records to facilitate future reference and compliance audits. Assist in the development of user manuals and technical documentation for new products. Collaborate with suppliers to source materials and components that meet design specifications and quality standards. Support marketing efforts by providing technical insights and participating in product launches and promotional activities. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related field. A minimum of 3 years of experience in product design or development, preferably in a manufacturing environment. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools for 3D modeling and design. Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, machining, and assembly techniques. Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail and a passion for innovation. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey complex technical information clearly. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines. Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and design for manufacturability (DFM) principles. Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to product safety and quality. Nice to have Experience with user-centered design principles and methodologies. Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing. Previous experience in the consumer goods or outdoor products industry. Understanding of sustainability practices in product design and development. Certification in Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing methodologies. Skills & tools CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) Prototyping tools and techniques (3D printing, CNC machining) Project management software (Asana, Trello, or similar) Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Communication tools (Slack, Microsoft Teams) Practical notes This position is based in Altoona, Iowa, and may require occasional travel for supplier visits or trade shows. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is available for qualified individuals.
