The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) is the statewide public defender agency that provides legal representation to indigent clients throughout the State of Oklahoma, except Oklahoma and Tulsa counties. The agency is seeking a full‑time Appellate Defense Counsel for its Appellate East Division in Norman. Job Title Appellate Defense Counsel (Norman) Job Type Full‑time, Regular. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and within the agency salary schedule. Responsibilities Perform case management activities at all phases of the direct appeal in the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, maintaining complete and accurate files of pleadings and orders. Conduct initial and ongoing legal research; review court records to identify legal error, develop arguments within the wide scope of appellate review. Review jury instructions and make recommendations for change if warranted. Document important testimony and evidence admitted during trial to establish the fact pattern and identify potential errors. Communicate with clients concerning case status and comply with reasonable requests for information. Direct or assist in the preparation of appeal briefs and pleadings. Investigate matters outside the trial record when required. Prepare or assist in the presentation of oral arguments as necessary. Prepare for or assist in the preparation to appear on the client’s behalf in district court as necessary. Supervise, consult on, or prepare petitions for writs of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court in capital cases. Serve as co‑counsel and provide ongoing advice, assistance, and support to other attorneys. Participate in peer review of all attorney work product. Qualifications Juris Doctorate degree and active membership or good standing with the State Bar of Oklahoma, or eligibility for admission. Experience with the Oklahoma state court system, civil and criminal law and procedure. Ability to conduct legal research and prepare or assist in the preparation of legal documents for assigned cases. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of the Oklahoma state court system Conducting legal research Civil and criminal law and procedure Effective oral and written communication Interviewing clients, witnesses, and other parties Investigative processes and procedures Court proceedings to avoid legal error Job Requirements Must abide by the Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct. Job‑related travel may be required.
