The Food and Drug Branch’s (FDB) mission is to protect and enhance the public health and well‑being for all through sound science and enforcement of laws and regulations pertaining to food, cosmetics, drugs, medical devices, and industrial hemp products. Job Description and Duties THERE IS ONE VACANCY BEING ADVERTISED ACROSS MULTIPLE COUNTIES. THE INCUMBENT WILL BE HEADQUARTERED IN THE COUNTY NEAREST THE RESIDENCE OF THE SELECTED CANDIDATE. THE COUNTIES ARE: * Sacramento, Contra Costa, Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino County. * This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s mission and strategic plan by promoting health and wellness and improving state health outcomes by advancing protective measures and reducing risks. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) (SESS) is the Continuous Improvement Specialist in the Standardization and Continuous Improvement Unit (SCIU). The incumbent consults internally and advises departmental leadership regarding continuous quality improvement initiatives, organizational development, performance, and effectiveness goals and strategies. The SESS leads process improvement projects, cross‑cutting initiatives, performance auditing, performance evaluation, program effectiveness analysis, risk assessments, and internal quality monitoring and controls. The incumbent develops food safety program policy and standard operating procedures; facilitates implementation; and monitors the development and training of qualified resources. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief, Food and Drug Unit of the Food and Drug Branch (FDB), in the Food Investigations and Technical Support Section (FITSS), SCIU. Desirable Qualifications Ability to work constructively with internal and external stakeholders. Experience developing and monitoring continuous improvement projects. Experience implementing innovative methods to standardize procedures and processes. Experience delivering oral presentations, training, and education to internal staff. Knowledge of State and Federal food safety laws and regulations. Knowledge of continuous improvement process and root cause analysis. Experience in providing technical assistance to stakeholders. Knowledge of legislative process and bill analysis. Strong strategic communication, public speaking, and teaching skills. Strong critical thinking, analytical, and organizational skills.
