Patient Service Center Lead/Float Phlebotomists work in multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) staffed by Beth Israel Lahey Health Phlebotomy Services, as needs arise, to cover for PSC Phlebotomists' paid time off, other absences, and FLMAs, cover for vacant PSC Phlebotomist positions, reduce patient wait times, and facilitate the opening of new lab Patient Service Centers. As a Lead/Float Phlebotomist, you will have the opportunity to gain extensive experience working with patients, team members, and healthcare providers. Responsibilities Provide excellent phlebotomy and phlebotomy-related services for all patients. Validate and/or update patient demographic information in the BILH computer system for scheduled lab tests, and collect and accurately enter demographic, insurance, and lab test orders into the BILH computer system for other patients. Collect specimens according to established procedures (venipuncture and capillary techniques) for all age groups. Prepare all collected specimens for transport via courier service to a BILH laboratory. Perform administrative and clerical duties necessary to open, operate, and close the Patient Service Center daily. Assist in training, coaching, and mentoring PSC Phlebotomists as requested. Travel to additional Patient Service Centers and doctor’s office sites when needed. Read, understand, and comply with all departmental policies and procedures. Report to, receive training from, and take direction from the Phlebotomy Supervisor responsible for the assigned Patient Service Center. Participate in lab QA programs, competency assessments, and continuing education. Consistently provide services that meet the needs of patients and providers, ensuring high patient satisfaction. Perform other similar tasks requested by the Phlebotomy Supervisor or the Manager of BILH Phlebotomy Services. Requirements High School diploma or GED. Associate’s Degree or college coursework welcomed. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently or in a team environment. Comfortable working with minimal supervision. Basic familiarity with computer applications preferred. Phlebotomy certification from ASCP or another accredited agency preferred. Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred. One or more years of experience working in lab Patient Service Centers preferred. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures, and policies and use them in varied situations. Team Work: Ability to lead small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment, improving workflows; results may impact operations of one or more departments. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using active listening and problem solving; remain calm in stressful situations. Social/Environmental Requirements Work requires close attention to tasks; intermittent breaks do not compromise work. Work routine is consistent; employees must use judgment to respond to events several times a week. No substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Sensory Requirements Visual clarity within 3 feet; conversation. Physical Requirements Light work: Exert up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements are sedentary, but employee must stand for periods or move throughout the hospital campus. Requires frequent walking, standing, bending neck and waist, power grasping, fine manipulation, pushing/pulling, keypad use. Pay Range $24.26 - $32.64 per hour. The pay range represents the base hourly wage the organization expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable and in accordance with the law.
