Equipment Operator

District 3 Steamboat Springs Shop

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, operates a wide variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment in the performance of county road, bridge, and other types of construction and maintenance projects; performs routine preventive maintenance work and semi-skilled vehicle and equipment repairs; operates light and heavy equipment; performs basic welding to fabricate and/or repair equipment and tools; may perform general shop building and shop grounds maintenance duties as assigned; and performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Operates heavy equipment such as motor graders, trucks, bulldozers, and backhoes to grade roads, haul gravel and other materials, repair bridges, install culverts and cattle guards, and support other county infrastructure and right-of-way projects and activities; reads and follows grade stakes and engineering plans and specifications.

• Operates snowplow trucks and other equipment during the winter to clear roads and maintain road safety.

• Assesses equipment capabilities and determines which equipment is best suited for a particular job.

• Monitors equipment function and identifies mechanical or operational problems; conducts daily required equipment inspections to identify needed maintenance and notifies a mechanic of major maintenance issues; performs preventive or minor maintenance such as fluid changes, wearing edge changes, lubrication, tire changes, and mechanical adjustments.

• Identifies unsafe conditions on equipment, infrastructure, and rights-of-way; notifies supervisor of potential problems in a timely manner.

• May be assigned to seasonal maintenance project crews for asphalt patching, dust suppression, sweeping, mowing, crack sealing, tree trimming, or other maintenance tasks; may install culverts, conduct minor bridge repairs, install signs and perform other construction-related tasks; may perform minor facility mechanical or electrical work.

• Responds politely and appropriately to public inquiries regarding work that is being performed; directs comments or questions to a supervisor as appropriate.

• Assists in keeping shop facilities clean and organized.

• Provides training and assistance to less experienced employees.

• Uses a computer to maintain files and records.

• Delivers and/or picks up items at other locations.

• May perform semi-skilled welding, cutting, and fabrication of metals.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:

•Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

•Three years of progressively responsible experience operating heavy road and maintenance equipment is desired.

Substitution:

•Vocational training/education may substitute for the above-required experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Colorado Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement at the time of appointment, or obtain such license within six months, and a safe driving record is required throughout employment.

•Pre-employment background checks may be required.
