YOUR ROLE

The Office of Research is Connecticut's leading producer of information and statistics on the economy, workplace, occupations, and careers. The Office prepares a variety of print and electronic resources for assessing the state's needs for skilled workers, assisting in economic development initiatives, aiding in the program planning of education and training providers, and guiding the career choices of job seekers and students.

In this role, the Research Analyst will conduct all aspects of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), a mandatory survey that is collected from private and public sector employers. Analyst will contact respondents via phone and email to clarify and correct data, explain Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules, and document all changes. Analyst will contact non-respondents via phone and email to collect survey data. Analyst will use the required classification manuals to code descriptions of cases by nature of injury or illness.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in research design and implementation.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Develops and implements formal research projects and assists in these activities on more comprehensive and complex research assignments;
  • Analyzes, interprets and prepares data in a variety of ways;
  • Prepares narrative and statistical reports;
  • Develops computerized databases and analyzes and interprets computer generated reports;
  • Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE


Six (6) years of professional experience in research, data analysis or economics.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in economics, statistics or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
  • Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience communicating to collect data.
  • Experience with developing, conducting and analyzing surveys.
  • Experience with sampling for surveys.
  • Experience classifying illnesses and injuries in a working environment.
  • Experience using the Standard Occupational Classification System (SOC) or the Occupational Injury and Illness Classification Manual.
  • Experience working in municipal, state, or federal government.
  • Experience with compliance for policies, procedures, or processes for safe, ethical, and secure use of data.
  • Experience managing, cleaning, and analyzing large datasets in a working environment.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced office environment.
