Orthopedic Surgeon/Adult Reconstruction

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) enumerated in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy). Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Degree obtained from a VA‑approved school for the year of completion. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed an approved residency leading to board certification. (Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs; alternatively one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.) Resident physicians in accredited programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis; PRPs are not independent practitioners and perform a limited scope of practice under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements: meeting physical standards for the position, a physical examination prior to placement, designated drug testing with random testing post‑appointment, lifting 15‑44 pounds, pushing (approx. 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing for 3‑5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception and color discrimination, hearing aid permitted. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – please visit Duties Participate in the comprehensive care of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, nerves, arteries, and overlying skin. Diagnose and treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, from congenital to acquired. Perform surgical and non‑surgical interventions including hand surgery, sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics, spine surgery, foot and ankle orthopedics, joint replacement, trauma surgery, and oncology specialties. Evaluate, diagnose, and surgically treat degenerative conditions such as hip and knee arthritis. Conduct examinations, document patient histories, and prescribe treatment courses for injuries, disorders, and malformations. Supervise direct patient care, including non‑surgical and interventional treatment options, and follow up for ongoing care. Explain surgical risks, benefits, and postoperative care to patients.
