Physician Assistant - Emergency Medicine

Grade 105 Job Type: Officer of Administration. Regular/Temporary: Regular. Hours Per Week: 35. Salary Range: $155,000.00 - $173,335.00. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary Under the direction of the Chief Advanced Practice Provider, the Physician Assistant will provide services to the Emergency Medicine Department at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Allen Hospital and/or NYP, Westchester. The individual will perform a variety of functions and technical procedures necessary for admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow‑up and outcome evaluation of patients. The individual will also participate in performance improvement, research and educational activities. Day, evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts are required. Full‑time Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are required to work a rotating schedule that includes day, evening, and overnight shifts. These shifts vary in duration, typically spanning 8, 10, or 12 hours. Additionally, full‑time APPs must maintain weekend availability and are responsible for covering at least one summer holiday (Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day) and one winter holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s) annually. The amount of overnight and weekend shifts that an APP will work in a given month can vary based on departmental needs. Responsibilities Obtain patients’ history, perform physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory, radiographic and electrocardiographic studies. Review laboratory results and other clinical information pertinent to patient health, order appropriate tests and other ancillary services as needed, and develop care plans for patients. Assist in the management of medical and surgical emergencies. Assist the attending physician on any procedure falling within the Physician Assistant’s scope of practice. Initiate subspecialty consultations or evaluations. Counsel and instruct patients and their families. Render appropriate care in the presence of a life‑threatening emergency when a physician is unavailable and document all care rendered in accordance with ER policies and procedures. Ensure all medical records and notes are countersigned by attending physician. Upon discharge, notes discharge summaries, prescriptions and any referrals on patient charts. Informs patients of the necessary post‑discharge care instructions. Weekday, weeknight, overnight and weekend shifts are required and equitably distributed. Functions within the standards of practice established by American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Practice. Acts within the policies and procedures of the University, hospital, division, and clinical department. Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, billing compliance and safety guidelines. Will perform other duties as necessary. Minimum Qualifications Requires Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience from an accredited Physician Assistant program, plus 4 years’ related experience. Current New York State professional license. Board certification by the NCCPA certification. NYS registered DEA, and BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification, required. Preferred Qualifications Two years experience in Emergency Medicine, ICU, or Urgent Care. Masters degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Other Requirements Must satisfy all clinical credentialing and privileging requirements of NewYork‑Presbyterian Hospital. Medical clearance and participation in the medical surveillance program. Direct patient contact and/or interaction with human research subjects. Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
