JOB SUMMARY Responsible for the leadership of patient care operations for the inpatient behavioral health unit, including 7 bed inpatient psychiatric care, 8 chair crisis stabilization. Ensures safe, trauma‑informed, recovery‑oriented care; maintains a therapeutic milieu; and leads clinical nursing practice and administrative activities. Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CMS Conditions of Participation, EMTALA as applicable, HIPAA/42 CFR Part 2 when relevant, and The Joint Commission Behavioral Health Care standards). Participates in development and implementation of policies, procedures, and performance improvement activities to support high reliable care, patient safety, and positive patient/staff outcomes. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Responsible for direction of the Behavioral Health Unit staff. Provides effective leadership; supports and empowers staff to embrace the mission and goals of the hospital. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met, and hospital policy is followed. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and provide for an interdisciplinary approach. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, Director of Nursing Services, Chief Nursing Officer and administrative team. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Responsible for performance improvement activities for Behavioral Health Unit Services. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria. Involved in at least one PI activity for each department per year. Maintains appropriate quality control programs. Performs probationary and annual employee performance evaluation, competency clinical skills assessment and age‑specific competency assessment for nursing staff within the Behavioral Health Unit department. Keeps employees informed about their work assignment, work progress, and opportunities for advancement. Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures. Assures documentation meets current standards and policies. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, developing, disciplining, and terminating employees within the departments of oversight. Develops, justifies and maintains a fiscal budget for those departments. Complies with ongoing departmental inspections of equipment and physical space. Makes recommendations regarding equipment utilization and needs. Knowledge of the 5 Rights of Delegation: right task, circumstance, communication, person, supervision, and feedback. Conducts regular staff meetings with unit education for each shift. Maintains documentation of meetings and provides written minutes for absent staff. Conducts all aspects of supervision in a firm, fair, and consistent manner. Gives positive feedback publicly and constructive criticism thoughtfully and privately. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards relevant to inpatient behavioral health (e.g., The Joint Commission standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, OSHA, HIPAA, patient rights, restraint/seclusion requirements, ligature risk mitigation/suicide prevention, medication management, and infection prevention). Participates in strategic planning for the department. Attends a minimum of 75% of Department Head meetings per year. Demonstrates knowledge of the Five Medication Rights with regard to a patient's age and condition. Reduces the potential for medication errors. Performs patient care responsibilities, considering needs specific to the standard of care for the patient’s age. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and the skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify age‑specific needs and to provide appropriate care. Ability to perform a head‑to‑toe assessment and reassessments on each patient population served, as per policy. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as a liaison between patient/family and physicians, other healthcare providers, and administration. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning. Includes the patient’s family in the teaching process, as appropriate. Interacts professionally with the patient and their family and involves them in the formulation of the plan of care. Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures. Able to perform services requiring technical and manual skills. Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies. Uses PPE correctly. Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA regulations: complies with Blood‑borne Pathogen, TB exposure plans, and Hazardous Waste Management Program. Able to perform all age‑specific competencies for populations served. Able to perform all unit‑specific competencies in clinical areas worked. Leadership and Human Resource Management Demonstrates consistent leadership performance and behavior by actively being engaged in making SMH a place that provides quality care by being a positive force within the organization and actively promoting teamwork and harmony. Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities Writes and conducts annual performance appraisals and ensures regular ongoing feedback, coaching, and communication with staff. Ensures a high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organizational needs and business goals. Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities. Administers organization policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with safety policies and good housekeeping. Manages initial training of new employees and ongoing training as required. Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfying customer requirements. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education, Experience and License Current Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure without restrictions BLS is required. Master’s degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing, or its equivalent, from a school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing, or equivalent combined education and experience. Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience, preferred. Minimum of 3 years of related experience, preferred. Specialty certification in related area, preferred. Additional Skills Basic computer knowledge Proficient in the use of Lean management practices. Excellent written and verbal communication; proficient use of the English language. Exercises a high degree of initiative, judgment, and discretion. Demonstrates solid abilities to analyze situations accurately and take effective action. Establishes and maintains effective work relationships, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Proficient in organizing work, delegating and achieving goals and objectives. Demonstrates a high level of judgment and discretion in developing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures. Works effectively with physicians, other medical staff, and external agencies. Demonstrates excellent customer relations skills.
