Substitute School Nurse

Location: Ogden Community School District, Ogden, IA

Position Type: Substitute / As-Needed

Position Purpose: The Substitute School Nurse provides health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. This role supports student learning by promoting a healthy school environment, addressing immediate health concerns, and ensuring compliance with district policies and state regulations.

Essential Functions:

• Provide basic health care and first aid to students and staff.
• Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
• Respond to medical emergencies and implement appropriate interventions.
• Monitor and support students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies).
• Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
• Communicate with school staff and administration regarding student health needs.
• Follow individual health plans (IHPs), 504 plans, and emergency care plans.
• Assist in implementing communicable disease control procedures.
• Ensure compliance with state and district health regulations and protocols.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized health office.

Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal or district administration.

Qualifications:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure in the State of Iowa.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification.
• Previous experience in pediatric, school, or community health preferred.
• Knowledge of school health regulations and practices preferred.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and families.
• Ability to work independently and adapt to varying school environments.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school building.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Work Environment:

• School setting with frequent interaction with students and staff.
• Exposure to communicable illnesses and minor injuries.

Terms of Employment: Compensation and work year will be determined by the district substitute pay schedule. Employment is on an as-needed basis.
