We are seeking energetic and skilled candidates to provide repair and maintenance of all mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and refrigeration systems serving the residents and guests who call University Housing their home. Work with a team of dedicated professionals focused on excellent customer service with no sales component. Base hours are all daytime hours with flexible start time. This position may have a rotating weekend schedule or scheduled on-call with standby and call back compensation. The ideal candidate will possess: Basic knowledge of the design, operation and functions of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems as they relate to building HVAC-related systems A mechanical aptitude with a willingness and desire to continue learning Basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance practices and occupational safety associated with the operation, treatment and repairs of same Ability to read and utilize mechanical and electronic thermometers, multi-meters, pressure gauges Basic understanding of electrical systems and service Basic understanding of plumbing systems Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and complete basic level repair service on electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. Experience with computerized database records or work order system Knowledge of maintenance and repair of appliances and equipment used for food preparation, commercial laundry equipment and basic home kitchen appliances Organizational and record keeping skills to prioritize and document work A desire to serve residents, staff and guests in University Housing Good communication and interpersonal skills and exercise a strong sense of priority and time management. Work Schedule: The primary schedule for this position is 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00am - 6:00pm, with an on-call or weekend rotation as required by the department. Work schedule will be set with selected finalist(s) at time of offer. Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand. Key Job Responsibilities: Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed Services and maintains university vehicles and snow removal equipment, assists with snow removal Assists with the oversight of student workloads, including training and installation, removal, and maintenance of window air conditioning units Utilizes specialized equipment to repair and maintain complex machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation Receives, inspects, inventories, and distributes deliveries independently to appropriate entities Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures Performs routine and non-routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness Department: Division of University Housing, University Housing Facilities Housing Facilities is part of the Division of University Housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Our team is responsible for the full spectrum of two distinct facilities operations, which include housekeeping, mechanical maintenance, infrastructure repairs and renewal, and long-term capital planning, for both undergraduate students and graduate students and their families living with us. As a student service organization, Housing Facilities advances the university’s mission by delivering safe, well‑maintained living and learning environments. The Residence Halls, consisting of 30 buildings and 2 million square feet, houses approximately 8,000 undergraduate students during the academic year and welcomes more than 18,000 conference and program guests each summer. In addition to living spaces, our operations support a wide range of programs and functions, including classrooms, office spaces, dining and culinary operations, marketplace venues, meeting rooms, and event spaces. University Apartments provides housing to an average of 2,500 residents in 1,240 apartments, serving a diverse community of graduate students, staff, and their families. The University Apartments community is located on over 80 acres of greenspace and also includes a large community center with a Housing-operated licensed early childhood education program. While most of our front‑line staff and supervisors are hired with a primary unit location to serve residents and guests, specific to their role, our facilities team is committed to remaining flexible enough to support each other and our operations as needed throughout the year. Compensation: The starting hourly wage is $25.00 or higher based on qualifications with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including vacation, holidays, and paid time off. Benefits information can be found at Required Qualifications: A minimum of 2 years of commercial maintenance experience Experience or training with installing, diagnosing, and repairing HVAC systems Experience or training with testing and monitoring systems for maximum operating efficiency Driver’s License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards Preferred Qualifications: More than 2 years of maintenance experience or equivalent combination of training and experience Related experience in a commercial, industrial, hotel, large multi‑family, hospital, or similar environment On-call experience Industrial, technical, or HVAC-related degrees or certifications Completed applicable safety trainings (OSHA 10/30, equipment training) Education: High School Diploma Preferred Additional Information: This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations.
