Utility Systems Technician Water Quality

The purpose of this position is to collect and test water samples and install, inspect, test, repair, and replace water meters and backflow devices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Collects, tests, and provides analysis on water samples. Responds to customer inquiries or complaints. Performs routine flushing of fire hydrants and blow offs at dead end waterlines and other problem areas. Performs checks on chlorine residual and documents findings at assigned locations. Completes analysis and reports and documents information from inspections, testing, and maintenance. Maintains, calibrates and cleans all necessary equipment for jobs. Supplemental Functions Performs other similar duties as required. Job Specifications and Qualifications Knowledge Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations Utility Services principles and practices Water Treatment Facility principles and practices Equipment and tools of the trade Backflow assembly operation and test procedures Licensing and Certifications Valid North Carolina Driver’s License Ability to obtain North Carolina Grade C Water Distribution Certification within six (6) months of hire. Working Conditions / Physical Requirements Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking. Medium Work: Exerting over 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Required Skills Reading and interpreting data Operating a computer and applicable software applications Operating testing equipment and instruments Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction Required Experience High school diploma or equivalency and at least six‑months to one (1) year of advanced study, with at least three (3) years of experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
