Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to lead tax planning, compliance, and strategy for a sophisticated private family office with significant real estate holdings. This hybrid role combines client-facing advisory work, hands-on technical tax preparation, and team leadership. The successful candidate will own complex partnership, corporate, trust, and individual tax matters, drive state and international tax planning where applicable, and serve as the primary liaison with external advisors and auditors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all federal, state and local income tax compliance and planning for individuals, trusts, partnerships, LLCs and corporations associated with the family office and affiliated real estate entities.
  • Prepare, review and file complex partnership (Form 1065), corporate (1120/1120S), trust/estate (Form 1041) and individual (Form 1040) tax returns; coordinate tax provision and estimated tax calculations.
  • Develop and implement tax-efficient strategies for real estate investments, transactions, restructurings, and acquisitions, including cost segregation, like-kind exchanges, and depreciation planning.
  • Oversee tax accounting and financial reporting coordination with the accounting team; ensure tax positions are reflected accurately in financial statements and support external auditors during reviews and audits.
  • Manage state and local tax (SALT) matters and nexus issues across multiple jurisdictions; coordinate multi-state filings and apportionment calculations.
  • Provide high-level family office tax advisory: estate and gift tax planning, trust taxation, succession planning coordination, and charitable planning together with outside counsel and wealth advisors.
  • Supervise, mentor and develop a small tax team and outside preparers; review work products, establish workflows, and promote process improvements and automation.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with external tax advisors, legal counsel, and trustees; manage engagement scope, timelines and budgets for outside specialists.
  • Perform tax research on complex technical issues, interpret new legislation and guidance, and communicate implications and recommended actions to senior stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships across investment, legal, accounting and operations teams to integrate tax planning with overall family office goals.

Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required; active license in good standing.
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally with a mix of public accounting and in-house family office or private wealth experience; experience managing a tax team.
  • Demonstrated expertise in real estate taxation, including partnership/LLC structures, cost segregation, passive activity rules, like-kind exchanges, and depreciation strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of partnership tax issues (allocations, basis and capital accounts), S-corp/C-corp tax, trust and estate taxation, and SALT planning.
  • Proven experience preparing and reviewing complex partnership, corporate, trust and individual returns and supporting tax provision and audit processes.
  • Strong technical research skills, comfortable interpreting tax code, regulations, and IRS guidance, and translating tax impacts into clear business advice.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and client service skills; ability to present complex tax concepts to non-technical stakeholders and executives.
  • Proficient with tax software (e.g., UltraTax, Lacerte, BNA) and advanced Excel skills; experience with enterprise accounting systems and process automation tools preferred.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid model (on-site and remote) and travel occasionally for meetings with external advisors and properties as needed.
  • Experience working with high-net-worth families, trustees, and multi-generational planning teams is highly desirable.
