CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID (CUPID) Postdoctoral Scholar

The Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) and CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID) experiments searching for lepton number violation and related physics. You will perform research and development on cryogenic calorimeters, associated detector systems, electronics, analysis software, and system layout for next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. Support the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to improve cryogenic calorimeter performance and optimize data analysis. Perform data analysis, support operations, and maintain electronics for the CUORE and CUPID R&D experiments. Support the development of analysis software for neutrinoless double-beta decay measurements. Report and present results in professional settings, including conferences, collaboration meetings, and local Berkeley group meetings. Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level. Publish papers/reports in refereed journals and make oral presentations of your own work. Mentor students in their research at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. We are looking for: Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics, High Energy Physics, Astrophysics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline within the last two years. Experience with AI, especially towards denoising radiation detector signals or optimizing analysis of physics data. Experience with nuclear instrumentation or radiation detection. Experience with programming and physics analysis. Ability to work with a diverse range of people. Ability to perform research independently and as part of a research group. Demonstrated ability to work in a research environment. Relevant publication record demonstrating proficient written and oral presentation of scientific results. Desired skills/knowledge: Knowledge of analog and digital electronics design and testing for radiation detectors. Knowledge of advanced digital signal processing techniques. Appointment type: This is a full-time 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. Salary range: This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The salary range for this position is $6,643 - $7,145 and is expected to start at $6,643 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience. Background check: This position is subject to a background check.
