The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) supports sterile preparation, instrument handling, and intraoperative assistance to surgical teams.

They work in operating rooms across surgical specialties to maintain a sterile field and ensure efficient procedure flow.

Responsibilities

• Prepare sterile field and arrange instruments, implants, and supplies
• Assist surgeons by passing instruments and maintaining sterile technique
• Anticipate instrument needs, prepare room for subsequent cases, and manage room turnover
• Handle specimen collection and labeling as directed by the surgical team
• Assist with equipment setup, counting, and documentation
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the OR environment
• Support anesthesia team as needed and ensure patient safety
• Document procedures and comply with regulatory and institutional policies

Qualifications

Education:

Accredited surgical technology program completion with certificate or associate degree

Licensure:

Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA is commonly required

Certifications:

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
• Basic Life Support (BLS)

Experience or Skills:

Experience assisting in surgical procedures, attention to sterile technique, and strong teamwork

Experience

• Experience in operating room support across multiple specialties
• Experience maintaining sterile technique and instrument counts

Preferred

• Experience with robotic or minimally invasive surgery setup
• Experience with inventory management and instrument repair coordination

Work Environment

Work in an operating room suite within a hospital or surgery center.

Fast-paced, team-centered environment with variable case types and schedules.

Adherence to strict infection control and patient safety protocols is required.
