Assistant Harbormaster

The Assistant Harbormaster reports directly to the Harbormaster and is responsible for assisting in the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the Queen's Harbour lock system. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vessels, maintaining community standards, and providing exceptional customer service to vessel owners, residents, and guests.

The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, boating knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to remain calm and professional in a variety of situations.

Lock Operations & Marine Services

• Assist the Harbormaster in the daily operation and monitoring of the Queen's Harbour lock system.
• Monitor water levels within the lagoon and report any concerns.
• Operate and monitor marine VHF radio communications with clear and professional radio procedures.
• Assist with enforcing Harbour Rules and Regulations.
• Maintain adherence to Queen's Harbour policies and safety standards, particularly in the absence of the Harbormaster.
• Assist the Harbormaster with the Manatee Protection and Education Program.
• Assist the Architectural Review Board (ARB) in monitoring the proper installation of homeowner docks within the lagoon.

Customer Service & Community Relations

• Maintain positive and courteous relationships with vessel owners, residents, guests, and contractors.
• Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries, requests, concerns, and complaints, working toward satisfactory resolutions.
• Provide information and assistance to boaters and visitors regarding lock operations and community regulations.
• Exercise sound judgment and professionalism when addressing unexpected situations.

Facility & Equipment Maintenance

• Inspect, maintain, and clean the floating dock and fish cleaning station during each shift.
• Patrol lock grounds and nearby lagoon areas to identify trash, debris, maintenance concerns, or safety hazards.
• Maintain the lock office, equipment, and Queen's Harbour boat as required.
• Report maintenance needs and operational issues to the Harbormaster.

Safety & Security

• Report suspicious activities to the Harbormaster, Property Manager, and Access Control Supervisor as appropriate.
• Assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, guests, and vessels.
• Follow all safety procedures and environmental regulations.

Requirements

Required

• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to interact effectively with vessel owners, residents, guests, and staff.
• Working knowledge of boating practices, seamanship, and marine safety.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to think quickly, make sound decisions, and remain calm under pressure.
• Strong verbal communication skills, including clear and concise marine radio communication.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

• College coursework, trade school certification, or related vocational training.
• Experience working in a marina, harbor, lock operation, marine environment, or waterfront community.
• Basic knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and standards related to marine operations.

Working Conditions

• Work may be performed in both an air-conditioned office environment and outdoors.
• Daily exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and sunlight.
• Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting, and working near or around water.
• Must be able to respond to operational issues and emergencies as needed.

Hazardous Checmicals

Employees may be exposed to a variety of chemicals used in the maintenance and operation of the lock system and facilities, including but not limited to:

• Cleaning products and disinfectants
• Bleach
• Paints and coatings
• Lubricants
• Oils and fuels
• Gasoline
• Other maintenance-related chemicals

Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be followed at all times.

Compensation

Pay Rate: $19.00 per hour
