Offshore Rigger
Reports To: Deck Foreman
Department: Operations Offshore
Basic Function: Provide back deck and rigging/lifting related specialized project support.
Position Summary
The Offshore Rigger is responsible for the safe preparation, handling, movement, and installation of equipment, structures, and materials during offshore construction, maintenance, and decommissioning activities. The role requires extensive knowledge of rigging techniques, lifting operations, crane signals, load control, and offshore safety procedures. The Offshore Rigger works closely with crane operators, construction crews, vessel personnel, and project supervisors to ensure all lifting and construction activities are executed safely and efficiently.
Rigging and Lifting Operations
- Inspect, select, and assemble rigging gear including slings, shackles, hooks, spreader bars, lifting beams, and associated hardware.
- Calculate and verify load weights, center of gravity, sling angles, and lifting capacities.
- Prepare loads for crane lifts and oversee safe load handling during offshore construction operations.
- Direct crane operators using approved hand signals and radio communications.
- Control suspended loads using tag lines and other load management techniques.
- Participate in heavy lift, subsea deployment, module installation, jacket installation, and topside construction activities.
Construction Support
- Assist with offshore construction, installation, maintenance, and decommissioning projects.
- Support fabrication, structural assembly, and mechanical installation activities.
- Coordinate with construction supervisors to ensure lifting plans are followed.
- Assist in equipment mobilization, demobilization, and deck management operations.
- Ensure work areas remain organized and free of hazards.
Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
- Conduct pre-use inspections of all rigging equipment and lifting accessories.
- Identify damaged, defective, or non-compliant lifting gear and remove it from service.
- Maintain rigging registers and inspection records.
- Assist with periodic certification and inventory management of lifting equipment.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company, client, and regulatory safety requirements.
- Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSA), toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
- Adhere to lifting plans, permit-to-work systems, and safe work procedures.
- Stop work when unsafe conditions or acts are observed.
- Utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Support emergency response and vessel safety drills as required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3–10 years of offshore construction and rigging experience.
- Valid Offshore Rigger certification or recognized rigging qualification.
- Current (or able to obtain) offshore survival certification (BOSIET, FOET, or equivalent).
- Current (or able to obtain) medical certification for offshore work.
- Knowledge of offshore lifting regulations and industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret lifting plans, rigging drawings, and load charts.
- Strong understanding of crane operations and lifting equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working aboard construction vessels, dive support vessels, pipelay vessels, or offshore platforms.
- Banksman/Slinger certification.
- 3-10 years of offshore construction and rigging experience.
- Experience with subsea installation and heavy lift projects.
- Familiarity with IMCA, API, OSHA, and client-specific lifting standards.

- Team-oriented mindset with strong communication skills.
- Ability to work at heights and in adverse weather conditions.
- Physical capability to lift, carry, climb, and work extended shifts offshore.
- Advanced rigging and load-handling techniques.
- Minimum 1-2 years offshore rigging experience in the role of a back deck rigger on an offshore construction vessel or anchor handling vessel
Working Conditions
- Offshore rotational schedule (e.g., 28/28, 35/35, or project-specific rotation).
- Work performed on construction vessels, and marine assets.
- Exposure to varying weather and sea conditions.
- Frequent lifting, climbing, bending, and prolonged standing.
- Extended periods away from home during offshore assignments.

- Maintain a strong safety record with zero preventable incidents.
- Execute lifting operations in compliance with approved procedures.
- Demonstrate proficiency in rigging inspections and equipment management.
- Contribute to efficient project execution while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Promote a positive safety culture and teamwork throughout offshore operations.
