Military Family Life Counselor (High School)

Job Summary:
The Child Youth Behavior - Military Family Life Counselor (CYB-MFLC) shall provide in person, confidential non-medical counseling service to military service members and their families. The CYB-MFLC program concentrates on the psychological and behavioral health of military service and support military children and youths. The position requires licensed professional counselors to provide support, solutions, resources and relief. The MFLC counselors works within and across the systems for Child Development, Youth Group and Centers, Families, and Schools to help in building resiliency, understanding the issues military children faces (e.g., frequent relocating, adjustment to new locations, stress, coping skills, loss of parent, absent parent, injury or disability of a parent).

Primary Functions/Work Responsibilities:

  • Consulting with teachers, parents, and children regarding disruptive class behaviorProvides face to face non-medical problem solving and solutions focused counseling to families and children when other resources are not available
  • Work with youths and teachers in classroom setting in order to establish the needs of teachers and students; along with group activities or individually in CDC's family childcare homes, chapel youth group, youth centers and teen centers
  • Interrelating with parents, children and teachers during sports events, special events, award luncheons, on field days, during lunch hours in the cafeteria, playground, front office and other common areas.
  • Observing classroom with teacher permission
  • Manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situation in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) practices
  • Provide outreach to parents during sessions of parent/teacher conferences, and meet for formal consultations to provide feedback and support
  • Utilize MC&FP COR and program office approved materials with younger children to address deployment issues
  • Work closely with wounded warrior transition programs to help children/families cope with stressors and experiences that result in service members' injury or disability
  • Conduct presentations for parents and teachers in small to large groups on subjects such as anger management, solving skills, and compassion fatigue
  • Interact with children and parents from the larger military community and Child and Youth Service (CYS), during parent groups, special events and center activities (e.g., weekend basketball or soccer at the youth center)
  • Provide support to teacher, families, and students concerning deployment and reintegration, while addressing school behavior problems and resolving student conflict.
  • Provide staff consultations for both work-related and child issues
  • Interact as necessary with installation POCs and caregivers to organize logistics and stay well-informed of caregiver challenges, and issues to use as a channel for information flow while facilitating voluntary peer-to-peer settings as requested in providing non-medical counseling.


Essential Job Requirements:

  • Government Clearance NACI, CNACI and IRC
  • Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health related field such as social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling
  • Must undergo and pass a minimum background investigation (MBI)
  • Must meet the United States Military Departments Residency Requirements
  • A valid unrestricted counseling license/certification that grants authority to providing counseling service as an independent practitioner in the respective fields (LCPC, LCSW, LMFT)
  • Be a citizen/ national of the United States of America
  • Government Clearance NACI, CNACI and IRC
  • Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health related field such as social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling
  • Must undergo and pass a minimum background investigation (MBI)
  • Must meet the United States Military Departments Residency Requirements
