About the Role

The Optometry Technician plays a crucial role in supporting optometrists by preparing patients for eye examinations and assisting with various clinical and administrative tasks. This position ensures that all necessary equipment is properly maintained and ready for use, contributing to efficient patient flow and high-quality care. The technician collects patient histories, measures visual acuity, and performs preliminary tests to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning. They also educate patients on proper eye care and assist with the fitting and dispensing of corrective lenses. Ultimately, the Optometry Technician helps create a welcoming and professional environment that enhances patient experience and supports the overall success of the optometry practice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a formal optometric technician training program or relevant clinical experience.
  • Basic knowledge of eye anatomy, common eye diseases, and vision testing procedures.
  • Proficiency in using optometric instruments and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as an Optometric Technician (e.g., Certified Paraoptometric Technician - CPO).
  • Experience working in a clinical or optometry office setting.
  • Familiarity with insurance billing processes and coding related to optometry services.
  • Additional training in contact lens fitting and dispensing.
  • Bilingual abilities to assist a diverse patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for eye examinations by recording medical histories and measuring visual acuity.
  • Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment such as autorefractors, lensometers, and visual field testers.
  • Assist optometrists during eye exams by performing preliminary tests and documenting results accurately.
  • Manage patient scheduling, maintain patient records, and handle billing and insurance documentation.
  • Educate patients on proper contact lens care, frame selection, and general eye health practices.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized clinical environment.
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize patient flow and enhance overall clinic efficiency.

The Optometry Technician utilizes technical skills daily to operate specialized diagnostic equipment and accurately record patient data, ensuring precise and reliable test results. Strong organizational skills are essential for managing patient appointments, maintaining detailed records, and coordinating with insurance providers.
