Position Description Position Summary The Pipe Layer is responsible for assembling, aligning, and installing underground piping systems for storm drains, sanitary sewers, water mains, and other utility systems. This role involves preparing the trench or excavation, setting pipe to grade, ensuring proper jointing and sealing, and working safely in accordance with company and regulatory standards. The Pipe Layer works closely with the crew to complete projects on time, within budget, and to quality specifications. Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Lay and align pipes for water, sewer, drainage, and other utility systems according to project plans and specifications.
- Prepare trenches and bedding material, ensuring proper depth, slope, and alignment.
- Cut pipes to required lengths and bevel or prepare ends for joining.
- Connect pipes using appropriate couplings, gaskets, seals, or welding methods.
- Check pipe alignment and grade using lasers, levels, and other measuring tools.
- Backfill trenches and compact soil around installed pipes.
- Operate or work around trenchers, excavators, and other heavy equipment as needed.
- Follow all safety procedures, including working in confined spaces and around moving machinery.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and safe condition.
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a pipe layer or in utility construction preferred.
- Knowledge of pipe laying techniques, trench safety, and utility installation standards.
- Ability to read and follow blueprints, grade stakes, and specifications.
- Familiarity with tools and equipment used in pipe installation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work as part of a team.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces.
- Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.
