Step into the role

You start your shift reviewing overnight scrap, cycle time, and downtime dashboards. A mold change is scheduled, so you prep the tooling, set initial parameters, and bring the cell online. A cosmetic defect appears on first-off parts—within minutes, you adjust temperatures, tweak back pressure, and verify gate balance. You document the change, coach the operator on the updated inspection points, and move on to a soft trim station to refine lamination temps and edge-fold settings. Throughout the day, you’re the bridge between production, maintenance, and quality—keeping machines stable, parts in spec, and the launch on track.

What you’ll own

• Set up, start, and fine-tune injection molding and soft trim processes to meet output and quality targets for automotive interior components.
• Establish, monitor, and sustain process parameters to deliver consistent quality and efficient cycle times.
• Troubleshoot process, material, and equipment issues; implement corrective actions to cut scrap and reduce downtime.
• Execute mold changes, perform machine setups, and make tooling adjustments to stabilize production.
• Own efficiency tracking and floor-level reporting for throughput, scrap, cycle time, and downtime.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks (lubrication, filter changes, minor repairs) and general equipment/tooling upkeep to ensure readiness.
• Perform basic mechanical repairs and handyman-style tasks (e.g., component replacements, fixture adjustments, tightening fittings) to keep production flowing.
• Analyze production data (scrap rates, cycle times, downtime) to identify signals and drive process improvements.
• Investigate quality defects using root cause analysis; implement corrective and preventive actions in partnership with Quality, including disposition of nonconforming parts.
• Support first-article inspections, in-process checks, and capability studies to uphold dimensional and cosmetic standards.
• Collaborate closely with Maintenance to resolve equipment issues and enhance reliability.
• Ensure adherence to automotive quality systems and standards (IATF 16949, ISO 9001).
• Create and maintain setup sheets, work instructions, and parameter control documentation.
• Support new product launches, including process validation and PPAP/APQP deliverables during plant startup and ramp-up.
• Train and mentor operators on process control, setup, inspection, and basic troubleshooting; provide hands-on coaching at the machine to build capability and reduce reliance on engineering.
• Assess operator skill gaps and deliver refresher training when deviations or recurring errors are observed.
• Maintain accurate records of trials, parameter changes, and production performance.
• Follow all safety procedures and keep the work area clean and organized.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 3+ years of experience in injection molding and/or automotive soft trim manufacturing.
• Proven background in process setup, troubleshooting, and optimization in a production setting.
• Ability to work required shifts and overtime with reliable attendance.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a manufacturing environment.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

• Knowledge of plastic materials, molding processes, and soft trim techniques (e.g., lamination, edge folding).
• Proficiency in setting and adjusting parameters for injection molding equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems.
• Hands-on mechanical aptitude to perform minor repairs, component swaps, and general facility/equipment upkeep.
• Understanding of process control and data analysis (scrap, cycle time, efficiency).
• Familiarity with IATF 16949, PPAP, APQP, and quality tools like 8D, 5-Why, and fishbone/Ishikawa.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, work instructions, and technical documentation.
• Demonstrated ability to train and coach with clarity, patience, and technical depth.
• Detail oriented with a strong commitment to quality and safety.
• Works independently and collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams; strong written and verbal communication.

Physical requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, stooping, crouching, bending or kneeling, close eye work, reaching, pulling or pushing; good hand dexterity, hearing, and vision are essential.
• Moderate to steady lifting of up to 50 lbs required.
• Personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
