Job Title: Firefighter Department: Fire Department Employment Status: Full-Time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Fire Chief Pay Range: $20.00–$25.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Position Summary The Firefighter performs fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency response, rescue, and medical first responder duties in the protection of life and property. Work includes responding to fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, and other emergency calls; operating and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment; conducting fire prevention and inspection activities; participating in training and emergency preparedness activities; and providing public education. The Firefighter is expected to perform assigned duties safely and effectively in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, applicable laws, regulations, and established standards. Employees are expected to develop and maintain the knowledge, skills, certifications, and physical capabilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Essential Duties And Responsibilities The Firefighter shall: Respond to fire, rescue, medical, hazardous materials, vehicle accident, and other emergency calls. Perform fire suppression activities, including operating fire apparatus and pumps, laying and advancing hose lines, operating firefighting equipment, containing and extinguishing fires, and performing salvage operations. Perform primary and secondary search and rescue operations. Assist in the stabilization and care of individuals who are ill or injured in accordance with established procedures and applicable certification requirements. Provide emergency medical care, including patient assessment, triage, airway management, oxygen administration, bleeding control, defibrillation, immobilization, splinting, and other lifesaving procedures within the employee's level of training and certification. Assist with the removal and extrication of patients from structures, vehicles, and other hazardous environments. Perform scene control and assist in maintaining the safety of emergency scenes. Respond to and assist with hazardous materials incidents. Operate fire apparatus, vehicles, pumps, hoses, ladders, fans, and other firefighting equipment. Conduct fire prevention activities, including building and facility inspections and fire coderelated activities as assigned. Inspect and perform routine service and maintenance of fire hydrants. Participate in the development and review of emergency response plans, building preplans, hazardous materials response plans, and emergency preparedness activities. Participate in continuing education, training, drills, and safety programs related to fire suppression, prevention, rescue, emergency medical services, and other areas of department operations. Assist with the development and delivery of fire prevention and public education programs. Prepare and maintain standard records, reports, training documentation, and other departmental records. Perform general maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, stations, and grounds. Maintain assigned equipment and report deficiencies or needed repairs. Operate computers, radios, pagers, telephones, and other communications and technology equipment. Maintain required certifications and participate in required training. May perform technical rescue activities, including vertical rescue or rappelling techniques, as trained and assigned. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Knowledge of: Fire department principles, practices, methods, and procedures. Fire suppression and prevention techniques. Firefighting tools, apparatus, equipment, and their proper use. Basic emergency medical and first responder principles and procedures. Fire prevention and inspection practices. Emergency preparedness and response procedures. Applicable fire codes, regulations, departmental policies, and standard operating procedures. Ability to: Respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Safely perform fire suppression, rescue, prevention, and emergency medical duties. Operate and maintain firefighting apparatus, tools, equipment, and communications systems. Follow established policies, procedures, and instructions. Learn and apply new and changing technology, tools, equipment, and procedures. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other agencies, and the public. Maintain professionalism, personal integrity, and good public relations. Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Work effectively as a member of a team in highstress and emergency situations. Perform duties safely while wearing required personal protective equipment. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Valid Tennessee driver's license required. Must successfully meet the physical and medical requirements necessary to safely perform the essential functions of the position. Must demonstrate that minimum job performance requirements for firefighters have been met as described in the current edition of NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications. Preferred Qualifications Valid State of Tennessee Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) license or higher. Previous fire service experience. Firefighter I and/or Firefighter II certification. Additional emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, or fire service certifications. Licenses and Certifications New employees who possess a valid State of Tennessee EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic license shall maintain the applicable license as a condition of employment. Successfully complete Tennessee Commission on Firefighting Firefighter I certification within twelve (12) months of employment, or provide proof of reciprocity issued by the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting within twelve (12) months of employment. Successfully complete Tennessee Commission on Firefighting Firefighter II certification within eighteen (18) months of employment, or provide proof of reciprocity issued by the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting within eighteen (18) months of employment. Maintain all required licenses and certifications applicable to assigned duties throughout employment. Physical Demands The Firefighter position requires significant physical activity and the ability to perform physically demanding emergency operations. Employees must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, carry, grasp, and perform repetitive movements. Employees must have sufficient physical fitness, vision, hearing, coordination, and dexterity to safely operate firefighting and emergency medical equipment and perform assigned duties. The position requires the ability to lift and carry individuals and objects weighing approximately seventy-five (75) pounds. Greater weights may occasionally be lifted, carried, or moved as necessary during emergency operations. Employees must be capable of working in protective equipment, including structural firefighting gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Working Conditions Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and frequently involves exposure to smoke, heat, cold, noise, vibration, hazardous materials, infectious diseases, mechanical and electrical hazards, unstable structures, traffic, and other potentially dangerous conditions. The position requires frequent work in confined spaces and awkward positions and may involve climbing, crawling, bending, kneeling, and working in restricted areas while wearing protective equipment. The Firefighter may be exposed to conditions that could result in cuts, bruises, burns, sprains, strains, illness, or other occupational injuries despite appropriate safety precautions and protective equipment. Work may involve irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays, emergency call-outs, and extended periods of duty depending upon departmental needs and emergency conditions. Equipment Operated Fire apparatus, pumpers, pumps, hoses, ladders, fans, rescue equipment, emergency medical equipment, communications equipment, radios, pagers, computers, telephones, personal protective equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, hydraulic and mechanical rescue equipment, and other tools and equipment necessary to perform fire suppression, rescue, prevention, and emergency medical duties.
