Field Engineer

Overview Position Summary: This entry-level position is accountable for providing field engineering project support to Orion. This includes inspection of project materials and providing work control guidelines required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by craft workers. The incumbent will typically work closely with the Project Manager, Project Superintendent, Project Engineer, Safety Representative, and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the jobsite to ensure successful project completion and close out. Specific Responsibilities Work with the Project Management Team and jobsite work crews to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new projects. Assist in the development of bid proposals for upcoming marine construction and services projects when assigned to the office. Estimate costs for upcoming projects, accounting for materials, services, labor, and other related costs. Perform drafting, charging, and similar graphical work. Collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure procurement of materials from suppliers required at the jobsite to complete the project. Inventory, check, examine, and measure materials received to ensure quality and quantity. Interpret project plans and specifications. Provide work control lines and elevations required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts (e.g., forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports). Check as-built conditions that require surveying techniques. Provide topographic and cross-section surveys as required by planning and payment quantities; provide quantity calculations as required. Coordinate surveying activities with the assigned engineer to meet construction requirements. Ensure project team members and work crews work in a safe manner and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies. Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to improve compliance with State/Federal regulations and enhance company programs. Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task when an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies; subject to disciplinary action for failure to do so. Performs related administrative and technical duties as requested by immediate supervision (e.g., certification training, safety training, procedure review). All employees must maintain confidentiality of confidential, proprietary, or trade secret information belonging to the Company. Position Requirements A B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Science or related discipline or equivalent work experience is required. Prior hands-on work experience in the marine construction industry as a Summer Intern or Co-op Engineer is preferred but not required. Candidates must have working knowledge of Project Management & Administration, Marine Construction, Materials Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance. The ability to quickly learn technical aspects of the business, strong communication skills, and the ability to interface with employees at all levels are required. Physical/Mental Requirements The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. Must be able to wear and properly utilize PPE as required (hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear protection, steel-toed shoes, etc.). Must be able to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with management. Must be able to remain calm during emergencies and evacuate the work area as directed. In Addition, Field Engineers Must Be Capable Of Walking, stepping, climbing, or moving between locations on the job site; may involve getting onto/off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters. Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods. Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40–50 feet. Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights. Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs as required. Adapting to extreme temperature changes and outdoor conditions.
