Summary
Performs numerous routine and designated chemically-oriented, metallurgical, metallographic, and heat treating assignments in support of productions operations. With NDT certification, interprets or evaluates test results in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications or procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
- Interpret the results of all methods of non-destructive testing (NDT), such as leak, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, eddy current and visual testing.
- Select, calibrate, or operate equipment used in the non-destructive testing of products or materials.
- Identify defects in solid materials, using ultrasonic testing techniques.
- Prepare reports on non-destructive testing results.
- Document non-destructive testing methods, processes, or results.
- Supervise or direct the work of non-destructive testing trainees or staff.
- Map the presence of imperfections within objects, using sonic measurements.
- Conduct liquid penetrant tests to locate surface cracks by coating objects with fluorescent dyes, cleaning excess penetrant, and applying developer.
- Visually examine materials, structures, or components for signs of corrosion, metal fatigue, cracks, or other flaws, using tools and equipment such as endoscopes, closed-circuit television systems, and fiber optics.
- Develop or use new non-destructive testing methods, such as acoustic emission testing, leak testing, and thermal or infrared testing.
- Perform routine laboratory analysis and document results.
- Maintain inventory of necessary chemical materials for laboratory.
- Troubleshoot, service, repair and calibrate various electronic equipment, furnaces, ovens, controllers, and recorders.
- Performs mechanical property testing.
- Performs equipment temperature profiles.
- Support Safety and Housekeeping in areas of responsibility.
- Inspects/reviews incoming and in-process material for grain size and proper heat treatment.
- Sections, mounts and polishes material as needed for metallurgical investigations.
- Set up and calibrate NDT equipment, evaluate NDT rejects for validity.
- Hold current NDT - In Training, Level I or Level II certifications.

Education and/or Experience
Requires an Associate’s Degree and/or two years related experience; or two years of college and three to five years of progressively responsible related experience; or four years of high school and seven to ten years of progressively responsible related experience; or a combination of education and experience. Knowledge of regulations regarding waste management, hazardous materials and methods of disposal. Knowledge of metallurgy, material microstructures and effects of heat treatment. Knowledge of NDT test equipment and test procedures. Knowledge of nondestructive testing applications and techniques. Knowledge of hardness, tensile and other physical testing equipment. Ability to perform laboratory tests. Ability to handle routine tasks and to carry assignments through to completion.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as quality procedures, government regulations, safety rules, production schedules, purchase orders, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications. Experience with Minitab is a plus.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events). Ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of specifications and information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, applicable laws and the union contract. Responsibilities include training employees; addressing complaints, meeting schedules and resolving problems.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
