Description:

The Health Assistant serves as a vital member of the school health team, executing administrative duties and providing direct student health care under the guidance of the District Registered Nurse (RN).

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• High School Diploma or GED required
• Valid Driver's License
• First Aid/CPR Certification (Current or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire)
• Basic computer proficiency
• Demonstrated ability to:
• Work effectively with children (experience supervising students in an educational setting preferred)
• Follow directions and procedures with minimal supervision
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, guardians, and the community
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records, behavior, and academic concerns.
• Willingness to attend specific training related to supporting students with complex health needs (e.g., diabetes, seizure disorders)
• Previous Health Room experience preferred

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The following tasks are typical for this position; however, specific duties may vary or change based on student needs. Tasks involving medical care may be delegated and supervised by the school nurse.

Administrative & General Support

• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student health records, medical concerns, and behavioral information.
• Manage, inventory, and restock health room forms, medical supplies, and program materials.
• Maintain current, accurate, and compliant student health files and immunization records.
• Assist the school nurse with annual, state-mandated health screenings (including vision, hearing, dental, height, weight, and scoliosis) and the submission of required state reports.
• Maintain a flexible schedule as assigned by the school nurse to meet fluctuating student care needs.

Direct Student Care

• Screen students presenting with illness or injury, administer basic first aid, and provide appropriate care as needed.
• Administer medications safely under the direct supervision of the Certificated School Nurse.
• Perform other health-related duties as assigned by the School Nurse or designated administrator.

Nurse-Delegated Clinical Procedures: Perform complex, specialized healthcare procedures only as trained and delegated by the Registered District Nurse.

• Diabetes Care Management (e.g., blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump/CGM management)
• Tube Feedings (gastrostomy/G-tube care)
• Emergency Medication Administration (e.g., Epinephrine auto-injectors for life-threatening allergies)
• Asthma Care & Respiratory Support (e.g., nebulizer treatments, oral suctioning)
• Bladder Catheterization
• Personal Care Support (e.g., diaper changing and hygienic care)

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Employees must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Physical ability to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height.
• Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
• Ability to effectively manage student transition to a variety of locations (e.g. P.E., recess, buses and lunch) throughout the day.
