School Crossing Guard
This position provides public safety work by guiding school children across roadways, intersections, and cross walks. Work involves directing and stopping traffic to allow school children to cross roadways safely. Duties include supervising school children along roadways to ensure order and safety. Work is performed with independent judgment within established general orders. Performance is reviewed for compliance with desired objectives and through observation of work activities.

Stops the flow of traffic at designated crosswalks, guides school children across roadways, and through traffic intersections.
Supervises school children gathered at roadside; maintains order; reports hazards and other problems to supervisor.
Maintains a neat and orderly appearance; maintains equipment and supplies.
Performs other related duties as required. May be subject to random drug testing.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Must pass a comprehensive background/character investigation, medical examination, drug screening, and polygraph examination; fingerprinting will be required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
If applicant served in the military, an honorable discharge is required.
Possession of valid Florida driver's license and maintenance of a clean driving record required.
Knowledge of municipal ordinances regulating the movement of traffic at a school crosswalk.
Ability to work with children and to instruct them in the need for crossing streets in a safe manner.
Ability to enforce firmly and impartially the laws and ordinances relating to the area of work.
Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
Ability to stay centered when challenged.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to react and control emergency situations for the safety of children. Must possess sufficient physical strength to stand and walk for long periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Must also have adequate hearing to anticipate possible endangerment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, that may be adverse and extreme (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, and stressful situations.
