Job Description Job Title : Substitute Teacher Location : Various Schools Salary : $22.93 - $25.10 per hour *Increased wage differential if selected for long term vacancy/FMLA assignment during the school year Reports to : Principal/Designee Bargaining Unit : Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) Benefits Eligible : Based upon assignment, however all Substitutes are initially hired in as a Day to Day Substitute. Telecommuting Eligibility : School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting Position Summary Retiree Substitute Teacher (Sub I – Job Classification AR90) Benefits: NONE Rate: $22.93/hr ($183.44 per day) Qualified retirees who must work a minimum of one (1) day per week. Individuals may work a schedule of one (1) to five (5) days per week. Retiree = Retired through the State of Michigan Office of Retirement Services Day‑to‑Day or On‑Call Substitute (Sub I – Job Classification 9000) Daily Rate: $22.93/hr ($183.44 per day) Benefits: NONE Assignments are “as‑needed” in day‑to‑day roles. Must work a minimum of three (3) days per week and may also be scheduled in advance to cover teacher absences related to district professional development or union business. Substitute FMLA/LOA (Sub II – Job Classification 9500) Daily Rate: $25.10 per hour ($200.80 per day) Benefits: Eligible for employee or family medical, dental, and vision benefits; eligible for personal illness days. Performs duties of the classroom teacher of record and must work five (5) days per week. Retirees interested in long‑term assignments are eligible for classification AR95. Substitute Long‑Term/Vacancy (Sub II – Job Classification 9500) Daily Rate: $25.10 per hour ($200.80 per day) Benefits: Eligible for employee or family medical, dental, and vision benefits; eligible for personal illness days. Serves as a vacancy assignment, performing all duties of the classroom teacher of record, including attendance, instruction, lesson planning, assessment, grading, and staff meetings. Must work five (5) days per week. Retirees interested in long‑term assignments are eligible for classification AR95. Minimum Qualifications Must possess 60 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university and a cumulative GPA of 2.0. Must possess 90 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university to be considered for a long‑term substitute assignment. Essential Functions Evaluate and assess students’ progress on a periodic basis. Monitor individual student’s progress. Receive assignments approved by the Division of Human Resources; selected to work in any school five (5) days per week. Report to the building Principal or designee at the appointed time per the local school. Review with the Principal, Administrator or designee, all plans, schedules and comply with the Student Code of Conduct guidelines during the instructional day. Maintain, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures for the school and classroom to which he/she is assigned. Teach the lesson outlined and described and prepared by the absent teacher, Principal or designee. Consult with the building Principal, Administrator or designee before initiating any teaching or other procedures. Assume responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class, maintain classroom management and control in class, as well as during lunch and recess periods. Report in writing on the provided form(s) at the end of each teaching day. Follow all District policies, work rules and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictate. Take corrective measures to enhance student‑learning abilities. Instruct students on proper use of equipment, materials, and textbooks. Maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment. Maintain accurate complete student records and prepare reports. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal/Designee. Security Clearance Internal Applicants Current Detroit Public Schools Community District employees do not need to submit a new security clearance unless the new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
