Host a Dog in Your Home for 2 Weeks

Can Do Canines

Host an assistance-dog-in-training in your home for 2 weeks!

Our dogs spend 8 months in training with carefully chosen inmate handlers at Rochester Federal Medical Center.

While in the training program, the dogs leave the prison and go to homes of volunteers for 2-Week Home Stays, in order to reacclimate to life in a home setting.

Volunteers should expect to:

  • Feed and provide basic care for the dog ( Can Do Canines provides the dog food!)
  • Provide daily exercise for the dog
  • Help maintain household manners (no jumping up on people or furniture, no eating people food, etc.)
  • Take the dogs on Public Outings to places like stores and libraries
  • Give the dog time to take it easy and be a puppy

Volunteers will pick up and drop off the dogs at Rochester Federal Medical Center.

By helping host a future assistance dog in your home, you are enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities. These dogs will grow up to bring their people more freedom, independence and peace of mind.

Plus, you get to snuggle with a life-changing dog!
