Senior Risk Manager

Job Summary SENIOR RISK MANAGER – Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, Engineering Directorate, National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. Full‑time on‑site position supporting innovative engineering projects involving advanced systems and components. Key Responsibilities Develop, implement, and lead risk assessments for engineering projects to support development, integration, qualification, delivery, and maturation of risk processes. Provide technical leadership in risk management across project integration, risk identification, and mitigation, requirements development and traceability, design mapping, failure mechanisms, assessments, and verification planning. Partner with project teams to develop deep technical understanding of system behavior, support maturation of system requirements, participate in system‑level architecture and analysis, and contribute to test planning. Apply project management best practices to define priorities, guide execution, manage schedules and budgets, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and ensure deliverables are completed on time and within scope. Lead and manage risk activities, including identifying, assessing, documenting, communicating, and mitigating technical and programmatic risks. Lead component and system requirements development, including performance requirements identification, interface requirements management, traceability, and verification planning. Lead system‑level design architecture and analysis that integrates components into a complete functional system. Prepare, deliver, and explain written and verbal presentations of technical work to stakeholders and management. Additional responsibilities for senior‑level candidates include broad consultative direction, high‑level authority, influence on strategic plans, and specialized expertise in advanced risk management. Essential Qualifications U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a relevant technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Subject‑matter expertise in systems engineering, including technical leadership and project planning. Experience executing highly complex engineering work, including developing, analyzing, integrating, or validating engineering designs in production, research, or development environments. Expert level experience with failure mechanisms, risk assessments, and verifications. Advanced experience in project controls, work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, and execution of work to meet milestones and deliverables. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage small or multidisciplinary teams. Expert verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration, presentation, and stakeholder engagement. Additional qualifications for senior‑level candidates include extensive expert‑level experience in risk management, advanced communication and facilitation skills, and a proven track record of leading highly technical teams. Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) and/or Project Management certification (e.g., PMP, Systems Engineering) are desirable. Security Clearance Requires DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship). Clearance is obtained after a Federal background investigation and ongoing random drug testing.
