General Description
The School Psychologist is responsible for providing direct support and interventions to students, consulting with teachers and administrators, and providing leadership at assigned grade-level schools to support special education processes and school-wide practices and policies. The School Psychologist provides program leadership for student safety and appropriate collaboration and attention to each student's readiness to learn, including needed guidance, discipline, and welfare. The School Psychologist may work in a variety of elementary and/or secondary educational, individual, or team settings.
Essential Functions
- Provide counseling, instruction, and mentoring for students struggling with social, emotional, and behavioral problems.
- Increase achievement by assessing barriers to learning and determining the best instructional strategies to improve learning.
- Complete psychological, social, behavioral, and other evaluations in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and district policies as part of the comprehensive evaluation process.
- Prepare required reports summarizing assessment results and making recommendations to address students' educational needs.
- Promote wellness and resilience by reinforcing communication and social skills, problem-solving, anger management, self-regulation, self-determination, and optimism.
- Work with students and families to identify learning and behavior problems, evaluate eligibility for special education services within a multidisciplinary team, support social-emotional health, and coordinate community support services.
- Collaborate and consult with educators on caseload management, academic and behavioral interventions, progress monitoring, and effective individualized instruction.
- Collaborate with administrators to analyze data for school improvement, implement school-wide prevention and safety programs, respond to crises, and design comprehensive school mental health programming.
- Coordinate service delivery with community providers to support student transitions to and from school and community learning environments.
- Serve as a crisis team member, providing crisis intervention for students and staff in the event of sudden illness, injury, or emergency.
- Case manage and maintain legal and district procedural compliance for students assigned to school portfolio and/or considered for special education eligibility.
- Initiate contact with and act as a liaison between home, school, community health agencies, and the private medical sector to enhance health and wellness.
- Fulfill mandated reporter responsibilities regarding suspected abuse or neglect.
Job Qualifications
Licensure & Certification
- Hold a valid Oregon School Psychologist's license (required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish.
- Experience working with students across a wide range of special education disabilities, particularly emotional disturbance, other health impairments, and autism spectrum disorder.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of students with a wide range of special education disabilities, IDEA, state and federal special education laws and regulations, Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and research-based behavioral and educational strategies.
- Ability to demonstrate strong theoretical background in working with culturally diverse populations.
- Ability to adhere to ethical standards of the psychology profession and interpret testing results and other student data accurately.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families, both orally and in writing.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily in elementary and/or secondary educational settings, office spaces, or team environments. Requires the ability to remain observant, respond to student needs, handle crisis situations, maintain strict confidentiality, and collaborate professionally with multidisciplinary teams.
- Physical activities include standing, walking, sitting, driving between sites as necessary, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
- Light Work: Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Position requires walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting with light pushing and pulling.
