The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center is a Joint Commission accredited facility serving Veterans in Mississippi and parts of Louisiana. The VA Medical Center is located in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Surgical Service staff will function within their approved clinical privileges, providing preoperative, operative, and postoperative care to our patients. In addition, staff surgeons will assess and manage patients in the surgical specialty clinics, as well as on the wards, emergency department, and nursing home. Staff will be expected to provide the highest quality surgical care possible, to the greatest number of veterans in a timely manner, compassionate, efficient, and cost-effective manner.

EDRP Authorized: This position is eligible for EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of your start date. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
Some of the responsibilities are:
- Provides guidance and clinical supervision for the nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and health technicians assigned to the Surgical Service when appropriate.
- Participates and attends medical center committee meetings as assigned by the Chief, Surgical Service in his/her absence.
- Assists in the development, implementation, and expansion of programs in the Surgical Service.
- Revises work schedules and assignment on short notice to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines.
- Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, to include but not limited to Process Action Teams, Root Cause Analysis, and Peer Review.
- Commits to attending surgical staff morbidity and mortality meetings.
- Exhibits leadership in initiating change in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from evidence-based research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
- Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plan of patents.
- Successfully integrates patient care activities on the Surgical Service with other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community, such as Social Work, Prosthetics, and Nursing Home.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm with occasional rotations
