Transportation Engineer I Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support. Interprets manuals and required guidelines for traffic operations. Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff. May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks. Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts. Provides technical assistance in drainage design, resolution of drainage complaints, hydraulics evaluations and other hydrology matters. Represents the district/division at various meetings. Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for transportation projects. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Transportation Engineer II Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. The essential duties for this job includes those listed above and the following: Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts. Makes presentations and represents TxDOT. Writes/reviews proposals and estimates for letting. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. ( Applicable to both levels ) Transportation Engineer I Experience: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Transportation Engineer II Experience: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certification (Applicable to both levels) Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Licensed Prof Engineer* Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment. Competencies Transportation Engineer I Considerable knowledge of Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements Construction phasing and sequencing Pavement concepts, methods, policies and requirements Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities Proficient skill in Performing basic design and drafting Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines Training in a classroom, office, or field environment Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Other attributes Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; making decisions that support business objectives and goals Transportation Engineer II The competencies for this job include those listed above and the following: Considerable knowledge of Highway construction design and applications Cost estimating and cost controls Proficient skill in Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions Subject to noise Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
