University Animal Care, at the University of Arizona, is in search of an Animal Technician III. The incumbent is responsible for providing the daily care of a variety of research animal species, including non-human primates, or animals exposed to hazardous materials and/or assigned additional cage wash duties such as operating complex equipment, and perform detailed documentation of these activities. Incumbents are generally assigned to perform animal care duties within in one facility, while Cage Wash activities are performed in multiple facilities. Work is performed under minimal supervision with assigned general expectations. The work schedule includes participation in the Animal Care holiday rotation schedule, weekends, and may include compensated overtime.
University Animal Care (UAC) manages multiple centralized animal facilities at the University of Arizona and oversees the campus wide animal care and use program. UAC provides assistance to scientists, physicians, staff, and students who have received Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval to perform research, testing, or educational studies on animal subjects. UAC ensures humane and appropriate animal care and use by providing for the animals daily needs, veterinary care, and monitoring the use of the animals by principal investigators, technical personnel, and students. UAC is devoted to maintaining a safe environment that minimizes the risk of disease or injury to the animals and the personnel who work with them. UAC maintains accreditation by AAALAC International, the gold standard for animal care and use programs.

Duties & Responsibilities- Perform basic breeding colony tasks, such as separating breeders and weaning litters.
- Administer treatments to animals as prescribed by Veterinarians.
- Assist in the training of new and existing employees in routine animal care procedures.
- Provide daily care to other laboratory animal species such as rabbits, sheep, pigs, primates; feed, water, health assessments, and cleaning of primary housing enclosures.
- Provide care to laboratory rodents; feed, water, changing cages, and health assessments on a daily basis.
- Complete necessary documentation daily such as:
- Notifications to the investigators about weans, arriving animals, animal deaths, etc.
- Notifications to Vet Services requesting sick animal be looked at.
- Notifications to their managers regarding room issues, rack issues, flooded cages, etc.
- Filling out cage card for weaned or split cages and turning in the strips for processing.
- Filling out the information on the bags of dead animals.
- Filling out the Environmental Assessment sheet for each room they go in: humidity (high, low, current), temperature (high, low, current), time in and out of room, lighting and light timer assessments, number of AERFs submitted, number of animals found dead, information about flooded cages, number of cages, or cage components changed, other work performed in room, airflow checks, sanitation work done, what types of notifications set, animal/room observations, what type of notifications were sent.
- Submit recharge information to business office.
- Submit maintenance requests.
- Collect and prepare clean caging, feed, extra enrichment, etc. for daily use.
- Clean and stock rooms, disinfect hoods, remove trash, return dirty caging for processing.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Demands:
- Able to perform work that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting, standing and walking.
- Able to perform repetitive hand motions (changing cages).
- Able to be medically cleared to wear a respirator.

Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalency is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- AALAS certification and/or previous lab animal experience a plus.
